:blue1:Ok, so I am new to this site or any forum. I looked for a forum that would have a lot of members. I have a very strong message to get out and I hope I can save someone and their parrot a lot of stress and money. Bare with me, I am not the best writer so I will just tell you what happened to me. I brought home a new parrot and its cage. But before I brought the cage into my home I wanted to give it a good cleaning. It's a very nice and large cage. As a matter of fact it had to be broken down in order to get it out of the last owner’s door. I set up two benches to lay one section flat to clean it I had a bucket of hot water and a brush, and a spray bottle of bleach and water. As I started to clean I sprayed it with the bleach mixture and let it set awhile, then I used the soap and water with a brush to start scrubbing all the bars down, Then I let that soak for a while, now it’s time to give it a good rinsing. My hose has the nozzle that puts out strong water pressure. And this is where it all started. I saw a Roach crawling on the bar of cage (I thought where did that come from) I killed the bug and continued to rinse the cage and then I saw another one. (Could that be the same one or ??). Then I thought! I placed the nozzle in one of the screw holes to flush out the hollow bars. Out came more roaches and more roaches. Yes there were roaches and roaches and roaches throughout each side, bottom and top of the cage. I thought I was going to DIE. My husband and I killed roaches for two days. If I would have brought that cage in the day I got it, my home would be infested with roaches and I would not have known where they came from. I’ll be honest; I would have never in a thousand years to think of a bird cage being a roach motel. I never, to this day have brought that cage in my home. We have made a rule never to take some ones used cage again. If you seem signs or even a small problem with a roach, and don’t know where their coming from tear down your cage and inspect it. It might be a job but it just might save you a ton of money and a lot of stress on you bird.

EWWWWWWWW!!!!!!!!! Blech! Blech! Blech!! [emoji33]

Unfortunately the parts of the cage where the bars go in, are hollow and are traps for food, water, and whatever else decides to make it's way in there [emoji51]

Used cages always give me the heebie jeebies -I'm glad you decided to give it a thorough cleaning!

Whoa that's wild. And gross, seriously. Good to know. Hubbs wanted to buy a used cage (Him being a tad bit cheap, and like why not? It's just a cage.) I wanted a new one, bought it, returned it and we built our own much larger enclosure in the end for maximum space for a large parrot.

Now just thinking about taking someone else's grosses me out. I'm glad you posted, because now I can tell him I was right. That's rare, and I get to gloat once every three years or so when that happens lol :) When I married Mr. Right, I didn't know his first name was Always.

As awful as that is, this isn't the first time I've heard that!. Someone a couple months ago had the exact same problem.

I personally buy new. It's just worth it for more reasons than no roaches!

I used to buy old cages to use. i've seen that happen waay to many times. BTW cheaper cages are more prone to bugs because of the open areas. Hopefully spending a little more for a better cage is worth it.

I used to buy used for the cages I would keep outside, now I try to build my own for that and buy new for inside!

Wow thank you for sharing this gross awful experience with us fellow bird lovers. I have only ever bought new but I do have one to give away or sell, mind you the is cage is only 3 months old and hs a rescue male galah in it (building a larger avairy for my 2 rescue Galah's with a divider between them so they have lots more room). Now makes me wonder whether I should even give it away. Might destroy it and trash it
