I have adopted a Quaker parrot we are calling him Harley.
I have just adopted a Quaker parrot. His story is pretty sad. His previous owner died after a long illness. With 10 inches of snow on the ground and single digit temps, movers scheduled & utilities to be turned off in a couple of days. A health care aid reached out to find him a good home.

I did some research and picked him up the next day. They knew little about him not even his name . His cage was too small and his only toy destroyed. He did seem to be healthy and active. I replaced the cage with a huge one , new perches, plenty of toys. I'm trying to acclimate him to a healthier diet with fresh fruits and veggies and a mix of pellet & seed.

They did say he could talk however i haven't heard him yet in the 9 days he has been with us! It's been a big adjustment for him, we have a active home with 3 tiny dogs which are amazed by him and a very old tom cat who could care less as well as 3 people. I'm sure he misses his person too!!So far he will not step up. He will take food from my hand. He did try to bite us during the cage transfer.

Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated!! We are calling him Harley for now but are hoping he will at some point tell us he's name! :greenyellow::

What a heartbreaking story! I am so glad that he found a good home. Give him lots of time and patience would be my biggest piece of advice. He has been through a lot. It will take him time to adjust, but I am willing to bet once he does you will have a wonderful new addition to your family. I am sure you will receive lots of great advice from other members. Good luck and congrats!!

I adopted a quaker from a humane society and he was such a great bird. Time and love will bring out his personality. Good luck with him.

Trust me, it will get much better in time :) I fostered a Quaker from similar circumstances, but they do come around. It'll take some time for him to warm up and show you his personality and vocal skills. If the previous owner didn't have dogs/cats in the home, it will take him some time to get used to that, as well as the other people. Sounds like he's found a good home, and please do keep us all updated on his progress. Best of luck!

Quakers are great birds but they can be cage aggressive. So he may be protective of his cage. It doesn't mean he is vicious. Once out his attitude can change. They are adorable birds. Is he green or blue?
