New to Parrot Forums and Kinda New to Parrot Ownership and I have Some Questions

Sponsored Links
Hi! I have a Blue Crown Conure. I had been looking for a Quaker Parrot because I had one I loved dearly growing up. My husband got my BCC for me from a lady he worked with thinking he was a Quaker Parrot (he's not very familiar with birds. lol). I have had my bird for about a year now. I'm not sure of the gender, but I refer to it as a he. He is so shy. He used to try to bite me when I would even touch his cage, but he now lets me feed him and water him with no issues. He is still too scared to let me pet him, and I don't want to push it and scare him more. He won't come out of his cage at all. I leave the door open and sit near the cage, but not too close. He will poke his head out, but that's about it. He sits on the side of the cage that I am near. Is there a way I can get him to trust me more? Is there a chance that he'll ever get used to me enough to let me hold and pet him? I am more than happy to wait longer, but I would like for him to know he can trust me. Thanks so much!

It may be a long shot but I suggest you put a perch right outside next to the open door and put a spare dish next to that. In the afternoon when he's looking for food put a favorite treat in there and eat something while you talk to him. They're very social animals and sometimes they can be coaxed if they're in the mood for food.

Target training will get the bird out of the cage on his own if you work on it:

Target training inside the cage helps teach the parrot to come to the point where the stick is to get a treat. Eventually the parrot will come out on it's own to get the treat.
