Hi there,
I'm new to any forum that isn't disney related, and new to being a parrot owner. My late FIL owned a blue and gold macaw for years, and we've recently inherited him. At least we're pretty sure it's a him.
His name is Buddy, we think he's between 10 and 20. He's grown very attached to me over the past 4 months since we've started taking care of him...he's become my little monster, and I love him quite a bit.

I'll probably ask a ton of newbie questions, as I have no clue what I'm doing , and want to do right by him...so thanks in advance.

Hey there, Welcome to the forum! Sorry to hear about your FIL. It was kind of you to give Buddy a home. Sounds like you've gotten very attached in four months.

We have a great group of macaw enthusiasts, I'm sure they'll be happy to answer your questions.

Enjoy your stay!

My my, what a cutie! I've always adored B&G's, they're a dream bird of mine :) He looks like he's over due for a beak trim, though! A good trim and some hard wood toys will remedy that problem.

Yeah. I figured he needed some TLC from a vet/groomer. Having trouble finding one in the area though. Also lacking a way to properly transport him, although I've been told a large soft cat carrier could work...
He's got some large wooden toys, but favours the cardboard/rope ones more.
Also flipped when I put the sandpaper wraps on his perches since he wasn't used to them.

Presently have six Greenwing Macaw (17 yo), Red Fronted Macaw (12 yo), Red Lored Amazon (17 y.o.), Lilac Crowned Amazon (about 43 y.o.) and a Congo African Grey (11 y.o.)
Panama Amazon (1 Y.O.)
Welcome to the forums. He looks like he's got a lot of goofy in them.

Macaws are pair bond birds. They tend to form a very tight bond with one person. Looks like you're it! Socialization around other people is important, however, because sometimes they can get so attached that "their person" becomes the only one who can handle them.

I personally don't like the sandpaper perches. It can irritate their feet.

Here is some light reading for you! Enjoy! Any questions or problems, there are plenty of experienced mac owners on this board to help.
