Hello everyone,

My name is Joyce and I am a new member here, and fairly new Conure owner. I started with one rescue, Kiwi...who was meant to be for my husband, who was the bird-lover...but he went on a small vaca, and she turned into the bird love of my life! She was in a bad, bad home--an inside chain smoker. Of course, when I picked her up, I had no idea she was actually a rescue, I thought I was just getting a bird! After much research, some classes at the local ParrotU, I have since learned, she was in a bad place!

Then came Oscar; I follow a rescue group on Facebook, and they had a Nanday conure they just could not find a home for as he was pretty aggressive. He bites hard! But...my husband wanted to try and work with him; and so we got Oscar from the rescue. Oscar is now a happy, perching, sitting on his shoulder and eating with him bird! He's a lover too!

Then...my daughter wanted a bird also. She wanted the bond we have with our Conures...so we got Skittles, another rescue. :) Skittles, also exceptionally aggressive at the time...is now a wonderful perching, loving, cuddly bird with her!

Now, to me...Skittles still actively tries to attack me, but I don't mind, because he has that bond with her. I just tell him NO and stay away from him. :)

Well, we think Skittles is a Him and Kiwi is a Her...but I'm not quite sure which is the male and which is the female. What we were told, we realize, is not reliable. So...we shall see! Maybe we have 2 males, maybe we have 2 females, but we might have a male and female.

They are in breeding season, or rather, they are both starting to build and sit in a nest, are both exceptionally protective of the nest, and each other. As far as I knew, they had not bonded...until a couple nights ago. So...we shall see how this goes! Quite new on our end!

I am also a crazy cat lady; we have 16 cats. Yes, they leave the birds alone. The birds get to fly around the house, and are in their cages only when we leave, for their own protection. The cats don't bother the birds...it's a good mix!

I hope to learn a lot from you all, and maybe contribute when I can!

Thank you for having this forum, I have already learned a lot from it!

Joyce

Thank you all! I am looking forward to the "companionship" this forum has! I am excited to be able to learn more and maybe help someone, too!

Yes, 16 cats...I am trying to rehome a few; they were adopted out, but came back...I am the "save the cat from the shelter, from the wild, from the....whatever" lady. :) And I won't let a cat go to a shelter if I can help it...so I try to find homes for them too! :)

I look forward to interacting with you all!

Thank you for the warm welcome!
