Hi There,

I got myself a pair of GCC a week ago. I heard that it is healthier to feed the conures pellets as opposed to seeds. I went to the pet store but he said that they don't have pellets for conure but gave me instead pellets that he said are usually fed for pigeons. Attached Pic.
Do you think it is safe to feed these to my conures?

I wouldn't feed wild bird food to parrots, they have completely different dietary requirements and it could potentially hurt your bird. Simply put, it sounds like you need to visit a better/larger pet store or order some pellets online.

Harrison's, Roudybush, Zupreem, etc. are all fine, though you bird may develop a preference.

In the meantime, you could visit your local grocery store and make up some Bird Gloop. There are many recipes out there, just google it. Most of them will meet/nearly meet the birds dietary requirements as well until you can get proper pellets.

There's a link to a/the forum thread on pellets and ingredients.
Best pellets for more people are Harrisons (also one of the most expensive but good good reason).
Best to avoid Kaytee exact (company has a lot of negative workings and typically their pellets use dye that aren't safe for human consumption).

Read some threads, plenty have been made about what pellets people should use.
Consider your costs and whats important to you and your bird (organic, safe for human consumption, colourful, if it's colourful are the dyes they use safe, GMO free, cost per Kg, etc).

F.Y.I : Natural dyes are ok but synthetic dyes can cause liver problems in birds, synthetic aren't used in human safe foods because they cause us similar problems. In the pet trade food standards are sadly lower so it may be legal to sell pet foods with these dyes, it's not recommended to feed it to your pets for an extended time. Typically if a pellet is safe for human consumption they'll safe on the packet as it is a big deal for most bird owners, birds having small, faster metabolisms, the dyes hit them harder then it would a larger animal.

i would not feed those to my bird because they look to be unlabled and so then you cannot be sure as to what ingredients are in them. ppsrrots have different dietary requirements to other birds and therefore the pidgeon food will most likeley be just as bad for your birds as sedd. I suggest that you go to another pet store that sells a range of parrot pellets and get one that is a south amearican mix. I hope you find a sutible type of pellets and enjoy your birds. :D

Not advisable at all. Good job trying to find pellets, but pigeon pellets are likely worse for your bird than seeds. Might. Not be, but we really don't know because we don't know what's in them. Amazon sells most major pellet brands. Harrison's and TOPS (totally organic pellets) are considered the best by many, with rowdy bush next, and brands like Zupreem and Kaytee following those. Fresh food is also vital no matter what kind of dried food you feed.
