Boo and Atticus -- Jenday conures;
Meiko -- Sun conure;
Malachai (Mally) -- M2
Hi all!

I'm new here and I'm looking forward to chatting w/ others about the birds I've been privileged to have in my life.

I'm married (Dave, the most patient person in the world apparently to put up w/ me for the last too many years to mention in public) w/ children (two girls, soon to be 11 and 6). I'm owned by four birds and a servant to 3 elderly cats.

My introduction to birds was a year ago. After a lot of research, we decided to purchase a baby jenday, who eventually was named Atticus. By the time that baby -- who we met when she was approximately 2 weeks old -- was ready to come home, we were owned by both her and her brother, Boo. They were inseparable then and still are today. Our indecision over which one was the best for our family turned out to be one of the best things that could have happened to us.

As we learned more about living with birds, we had a discussion or two about adopting a rescue bird in the future. All of our past and present pets (cats and a dog) had been rescues or strays that decided they weren't leaving so it felt weird to have "purchased" a pet when ones needed homes. Ok -- I'm very good at guilt tripping myself. But we were not in any rush whatsoever.

Then, four/five months ago, Malachai and Meiko entered the picture.

My husband met Meiko, an 11 year old Sun conure who had been abandoned and turned into a local pet supply store who participates in fostering/rehoming. Meiko was waiting for home number 5. When we first met her, she was a sullen, sluggish, angry little bird who just wanted to sleep all the time. Dave keep talking to her, always finding a "reason" why we had to stop by the store. After a few weeks, it clicked. Meiko decided she liked him, and once she did, she really, really, really liked him. Meiko, however, did not like women. She still doesn't overly care for me but has warmed up considerably to our oldest daughter. She's my little devil bird and I'm sure eventually she might come around, but if not, I'm just happy she's happy w/ other members of the family.

Malachai (a/k/a Malley), a 2 1/2 year old M2, was from the same foster as Meiko. While I loved cockatoos, I never really considered one -- too many horror stories and while I'm use to having animals who think they're smarter than me, I wasn't sure about having one who knew she was. Then I lost my heart when I looked in her eyes. After a lot of research and soul searching, Malley came home. I could go on (and probably will in future posts as Malley truly is the owner of my soul) but just realized I've written a book! Sorry about that and I look forward to getting to know everyone!

I think the only thing we like better than members that write books about their fids (fids=feathered kids) are ones that post LOTS of pics of them (hint hint) :p...lol anyway, welcome to you, hubby and the flock (feathered and non feathered alike), lots of friendly folks here to share advice and experiences with......enjoy your stay! :)
