Hi everyone,
I am an animal lover but have mostly kept reptiles. Recently I have been asked to bird sit a green cheek conure. She has come to stay with me twice and the first time took a few days to become friends but now she is pretty much great with me. She is quite noisy and seems to need lots of attention, she is most happy when she is with me which is most of the day. I have her on my shoulder alot, I take her out a lot and she does really well in public but wont let most people touch her.

Now my question is I really want a bird, now that I have had this experience with Lucky the bird. I just am not that familiar with birds.
I am not sure what would be a good match for me and my lifestyle.
I am a stay at home mom with 3 kids , and quite a few reptiles.
I would like a bird that is very friendly, lovable, sweet and that will be ok with my kids. This bird will have alot of outside time and attention. I would prefer it to be not so noisy and be able to be alone for part of the day.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Hi and welcome to the forum, the one bird that comes to mind fitting the criteria that you've laid out is the Lineolated Parakeet also refered to as Linnies, though small in size, (about the size of a Parrotlet or Lovebird) they have many of the qualities as their larger parrot cousins without many of the negitives, while they may be shy at first they quickly warm up and can be very playful and affectionate, they are not noisy or as time demanding as many parrots can be and don't require overly large cages, they come in many color mutations and are well on their way to becoming the number one pet parrot, there are a few members here that are owned by Linnies and hopefully they will weigh in with their opinions and experiences, there is quite a bit of info on the internet as well and a little research may help you in deciding if maybe a Linnie is right for you, good luck and enjoy your stay here :)

I have a linnie...Levi. He is a lovely little bird. He loves me, he's very cuddly, but can be alone when needed. Levi did go through a nippy stage, but it was easily corrected. He also had a rough first hormonal stage where he screamed a LOT, but he's fairly quiet now. The contact call is shrill...I find it more annoying than Fred's occassional yell....but again, unless such sounds irritate you, I'd certainly recommend a Linnie.:)

Welcome to our group. I like the suggestions you have been given. I also suggest the dummy book Parrots for Dummies. It is a great resource and educational tool. Please do not take this personally. If you do get a bird there are lots that need homes in rescue organizations that are perfectally fine. East Coast is The Baily Foundation or Phoenix Landing. Good Luck

Thank you so much everyone for all the advise, and yes I would love to adopt.
I have taken in many reptile rescues so I know the need for homes for all animals. Thanks for the suggestions I will now do a lot of reading and see what I settle on.
:)
