Introduction & question

Hi everyone,

My name is Waqas and I am living in Dubai UAE.

I have always wanted a Macaw, but was always scared of not being able to take care of them. My brother recently got an African Grey (red Tail), after a couple of interactions with the African Grey, my long forgotten wish to own a Pet Macaw suddenly got back and I started visiting pet stores.

Having no knowledge of the bird, I was still scared to get one, but my recent visit to the pet shop made me forget that I have no knowledge on these birds and I should first look into them by reading and researching about them, I just fell in love with a gold & blue macaw even though I always felt that I would get a green winged macaw and got him from the pet shop.

Carlos is a 5 month boy Macaw, I have had him for the past 4 days. The night I got him, the pet shop fed him cerelac before handing him over to me, I got him home and fed him 1/8th of a quarter apple which I shouldn't have as he has not weaned and threw up the in the morning. I promise I heard the pet shop tell me that I can give him apple now and my wife was a witness, he later told me that I can only give him after 15 days.

He kept vomiting watery liquid every now and then which stopped late afternoon. His throwing up was sometimes with bobbing of head and sometimes without. the 2nd day also passed.

The 3rd day, he started making this sound and nudging his wing at the same time, he is not aggressive but keeps making this sound maybe for attention with wing nudge. We thought that it is because he did not sleep properly so at night we put him to sleep early so he can have a good full 12 hours of sleep and also gave him a hour nap in the afternoon. But he did the same thing the next day and has been doing it since then. After I got home from work, I gave him food but this time gave a little extra thinking he might be hungry and it worked and he made very small sounds like he was tired. He did throw up the extra food that he ate.

I spent sometime with him and then we put him to sleep.
He is hardly left by himself, my wife spends the whole day with him, he is only alone when she goes to pick my daughter from school.

We have never had a bird as a pet before so not sure what he is trying to tell us and are a bit scared that we are doing something wrong.

The parrot has a perch and a tree, I have not bought a cage yet as the pet shop told me that he is a baby and can sleep on his perch. We put him to sleep at night in the toilet with the lights off as we are busy making a dedicated space for him.

Can someone please tell me what I am doing wrong. I have made a video of him making the sound that I was referring up, I will appreciate all the help.

Also can some1 list the things or toys that I need to buy for him. How do I make him play?

Am I expecting all this very soon?

Welcome to the forums, and many congrats on your new family member! :)

Having said that, PLEASE take him back to the store immediately so they can properly wean him. Your baby looks VERY hungry! Baby macs can easily starve themselves to death if not given the proper nutrition (via handfeeding). I believe he is not completely weaned. It's also not normal for them to 'throw up'.

I had never heard of 'cerelac', so looked it up and saw it's a wheat cereal. Is that what the store used to hand feed him? How did they feed it to him? Do you have proper handfeeding formula (for birds) available to you?

I honestly don't want to alarm you, but in your and the bird's best interest he needs to be weaned properly by someone who has experience with this.

Thanks for the warm welcome :)

You are correct, it is a bird formula, commonly known as cerelac here. The brand is Kaytee Exact Handfeeding Formula.

I feel he throws up when given extra food. I will try to take him back to the pet shop, but I doubt they will assist now with the weaning.

What should I do, if the pet shop does not help.

Thanks a lot, I will go through the instructions if the pet shop does not decide to take it back.

Just another question, when do they start playing? What should I buy them?

I only have a tree and a perch and a ladder.

I got him two rope rings, but he is not interested in it.

I should add here that at 5 months, your baby should definitely be eating some things on his own. Now's the perfect time to introduce him to a wide variety of fresh and raw foods, along with a healthy parrot mix (I recommend pellets as well).

As for toys, what do you have available? My B&G was already 'playing' (destroying) toys at 5 months. Wooden toys, SAFE bells, foraging things, etc.

Hello Rehmanw, and welcome. I have no advice to contribute as I know nothing of hand feeding. But I do want to tell you to take heart. I know you said you were afraid initially getting them, for fear of not to care for him. You had the misfortune to step into a highly unusual circumstances with the baby has not yet been weaned. Adding weaning on top of normal animal care is a huge mountain for a newbie owner

Most people buy their parrots after they have been weaned so they don't have to worry about it. I promise care after is so much easier. I really hope for both your sakes the pet shop takes him back.

You are so welcome!! :)

Again, please don't hesitate to ask, ok?

I hate overwhelming you with a TON of information, but feel it's important you read up on as much as you can, in as little time as you can, especially because baby is home already. Makes sense?

Having said that, here are even more links for you (toy safety) ;)

And I promise, no more links after these (for today anyway...HAHAHA). Here are some toys I made for my own big macs.

Hey Chris,

I will try to take him back today, but if that does not work out. We will look after him ourselves. To be very honest, my wife has been with him the whole time and she is taking very good care of him so far. And he is getting more fond of her, makes me a little jealous as i wanted to spend more time, which I cant caz of work. I work 10 hours and spend 2 hours in traffic.

So far the articles sent by JerseyWendy is what we have been doing but it still kept making those sounds. I have spoken to the Pet shop and they have agreed to keep him for 2 days to see what is going on.

Thanks guys for all your help. :)
