i have a new ring neck

i have just brought a ring neck parrot he is under 12 months old i was told he came from a home were he was kept with two other tam ring necks and a rosella and cockatiel i have brought the rosella and the cockatiel but i have seperated them because i fear fighting may happen

the ring neck is very hostile at the moment when is a good time to start working towards tamming him or her and how do i get hold of him without stressing him out to much can any one help me thank you all

thank you i will await some information from anyone who can help as i just want a bird that i can get close to and not get bit every time i touch him also i dont want to stress him out to much

hi, and welcome to the forum! I'm still a pretty "new" bird owner myself, comming up on two months with my Alexandrine parakeet. Buddy (aka Baby, aka Ms. Prissy Beak) is 8, and a rescue bird. Alexandrines tend to be a little easie gong than the smaller ringnecks, and she cetainly is an easy bid to get along with. Sh was also obviously loved and very well trained and socialized at some point in her past... She was quite standoffish with me for a solid week. She would step up, but not without a bit of beak-to-the-fingers protest, and was most happy when I gave her a toy and some food and stood well back.

After she got used to me feeding and providing her favorite toys (Ms. Prissy Beak LOVES foot toys, I don't know if the IRNs are the same way, but I think the fun, small toys were almost as useful an ice breaker as apples!) it's like she decided I was worth the time afterall and began interacting with me readily and of her own choice. The Ringnecks aren't known to be cuddly, but they are very curious and adventersome birds. Baby's favorite thing is to ride around on my shoulder and watch EVERYTHING I do, especially in the Kitchen

Ringnecks are also very quick learners, and easily motivated by reward (toys and treats). She has leaned some easy trick behaviors in just a few minutes.

my suggestion is to try providing some foot toys to keep the beak and brain busy while you sit with and talk to the bird. Provide treats if he'll take them, but like I said, I think the toys may have actually worked better with my alexandrine. Ringnecks love to chew!

Ms. Beak would actually step up while holding a toy, but if her beak was empty she would go for the fingers.

hi ye thank you for your info i will try the toys he has the toys in cage but he dont bother with them much i had my first bite a couple of days ago ouch i never screamed out as i heard they think of it as a reward and i dont want anouther one lol iv been hearing alot about his diet i offer veg and fruit but he loves his seed bell and apple but not much else that iv tried so fare

hello i have a indian ringneck under twelve months old i need to sell him as i have just started a college course and have two young children and really cant cope if any one is interested he comes with a new parrot cage and toys i want 120 for all thank you
