I am so happy to find Parrot Forums.com. I have lived in Costa Rica for over 20 years now, originally from Canada. At home I never had a bird, always dogs, but my first experience with a bird here - a yellow nape amazon - turned me into the bird lady of Playas del Coco. Although never having experience with birds, my motherly instincts kicked in. I am 67 now and have rescued and released many birds here. I adopted a Blue and Gold Macaw when she was 2 and a half. She was bitten by a spider when she was a baby and even though the breeder took her to the vet and they gave here antibiotics, she ended up with a paralysis of her beak and cannot break seeds or eat, nor drink by herself. When I got her, I was shocked at her size and condition of her feathers. She had only 5 frayed tail feathers from walking in her poop. When I asked him where she slept, he told me to put a towel down on the floor. I could not believe it. For a day and a half, I did not try to touch her because she was so stressed out by the 2 hour car ride and the new surroundings. I spent this time with her out on my enclosed porch, just talking to her and ignoring her. She finally came to me on the second day and I gently put my hand down to touch her. Well I could finally feed her that night and was so happy. The breeder fed her fried eggs and put fruit in small dog food bowls. When I watched her, I saw that she could not push the food back into her throat and knew that I had to change that. When he came a year later to give me her papers, he could not believe how big she was and that she had all her tail feathers. Well I have a very long story about my Pokey, but this is it for now as I have to feed her. I am so looking forward to talking with bird people who actually treat their birds with the care and love that they deserve.

Thanks to all of you who have commented with such kind words. I have to tell you it will probably take me a few days to figure out how this web site works. Once I get it, I will be writing more about the adventures with my baby. Thanks again to all
