'Rio' - Mexican Red Head Amazon (2016)
My new baby has been off formula for a week tomorrow, and has not lost any of his starting weight, so it looks like he will be here finally!!
I remember reading here somewhere in your forum details of what to do and not do on his first day here. I am unable to locate the post, and want to refresh what I had been reading. Can someone direct me?
Thanks :green1:

I'm so excited for you! I haven't been able to find the post you're looking for, but will keep looking:)
The main thing is to be patient and let him settle in a bit, and let him set the speed:)
Please post some pictures!

:green1:Thanks all, The main thing I gleaned from the post was "leave him alone" for the first day or two and let him settle in at his own pace, which is certainly what the plans are. Thanks Scott :I assume your baby is fully weaned, but there is still relevant information. I plan on reading the link as soon as I finish here.
FLboy, he is a Mexican RedHead and I have not named him yet, but have been interacting with him 2-3 times a week. I was thinking about Julio, but after watching the Olympics am leaning towards Rio. LOL The trouble is that almost everyone has a bird named Rio..
Maybe that will be my next posting.. "Name the bird".:green1:
Here is his picture from a month or so ago..

Welcome home to you and your new baby boy, I know you must be thrilled to be picking him up today. Since people far more apt than me haven't been able to locate the original post for you, I figured instead I'd give you my 2 cents on the first few days. And anyone feel free to chime in if you disagree with anything.

I think the single most important rule, is just to let your new boy set the pace. There isn't anything wrong with socializing with him early, and if he was ready to jump in your lap the moment he got home and hang out, that's absolutely fan. You just don't want to try and force him in to coming out when he isn't ready.

And honestly, he may be ready much sooner since you have been visiting him so much. He may WANT to be with you the second he gets home, and there isn't anything wrong with that!

Make sure his cage is all set up before-hand so that if he *is* a little nervous, you don't have to keep reaching in and out of his cage.

And, if he does need some time to acclimate which is also fine, it's still great to spend time near the cage talking to him, reading to him, letting him just get a feel for your presence and your voice, and just the overall vibe of his new home.

But again, as long as *he* is comfortable with what is happening, there really isn't any "to soon". To soon is just when we want them to do something they AREN'T comfortable with yet.

Again, great to have you, and can't wait to see and hear more about your new guy.

So he came home with me today. I can't believe how smoothly it went. I had both a cat carrier and a plexiglass bird carrier. The owner suggested the cat carrier, for the birds feeling of security, and his first ride in a vehicle. After about 5 minutes he finally stopped climbing like a banshee and settled down on the towel, and kept clucking at me when I spoke... which I did consistently for the 45 minute ride home. Once home I had him step up, which he did from the carrier, and I immediately put him in this huge cage with all kinds of strange dangly things everywhere!! He could have cared less!! It took him about 5 minutes to get acclimated and immediately went to work attempting to destroy some plastic chains.
I am so pleased... the breeder, in her wisdom, scared the *&^% out of me with all the do's and dont's of the birds first week in my home, so I was expecting the worse. Hopefully I am not jumping the gun, and speaking too soon but his first day went just fantastically. Whew....
