Crimson bellied vs Sun or Dusky conure

Hi,

I'm really happy to have joined this group. I have birds now and for the past 2 years I have wanted to add a conure to my flock. I have done some research and I think I have narrowed it down to a few. Crimson bellied, Sun, or Dusky. I'm wanting a "snuggle" buddy sort of speak. My current birds are not necessarily "cuddly". I didn't know if maybe some people that actually have some of these particular birds could tell me their experience with them so I can hear first hand what they can be like.

I'm really excited and looking forward to responses, suggestions, and comments.

I have a Crimson Bellied who has been with us for almost 3 years, and he will cuddle a little, but then likes to take a nip. He has an amazing personality, though, and is a great little guy, full of life and afraid of nothing.
I also have a Sun, he has been with us only a few months and was a breeder for all his 15 years. He is a great bird as well, but still working on building trust with him. I know there are several members who have very cuddly Suns who will be able to help add more.

I'd love to see pictures of your current flock and hear about them too when you have time I'm really glad you joined us!

Thanks, I'm very excited since I at times need advice on things. I got my first bird about 24 years ago. After that it was all history. My oldest is 24 Mambo a male Solomon Island Eclectus. I got him sort of out of impulse. I saw him and could not believe that something so beautiful actually existed. After I got him I wanted to make sure that he lived as long as possible so I had to learn quickly about parrots. Spike our male cockatiel is 15. My daughter got him as a surprise for me with her very first paycheck when she was in high school, Navi our parakeet is 10 my husband surprised me with him for one of our anniversaries. Wasabi (age unknown he was a rescue, vet estimated 3-4 years or so) he's one of my Rock pebblers and he's been with us 2 years. Kirby our Galah is 1, and the duo the other 2 rock pebblers are almost 1. They came to me via a friend. His birds had a clutch snd he didn't have the space for them so he gave them to me.

I'd love to attach pictures but I can't figure out how just yet. As we all are. I'm very proud of my little ones and love to share pictures.

I can't speak to crimsons or duskys, so I'll leave that to others.

I do know that from what I have read on this forum, conures- in general, are snuggly.

That being said- any bird could be a snugglebug and some we'd think would be may not- its really up to the bird and to some extent the owner. I had a cockatiel for nearly 20 years and she was so docile I could toss her around like a football, she'd just go limp in my arms as if she knew she were safe. She was a bigtime cuddlebug. I also had a budgie for 11 years that liked to cuddle in my armpits. So it isn't really a 'species specific' trait- some species may be more "LIKELY" to be cuddly, but that doesn't guarantee that they will be.

I do know that, statistically, toos and suns seem to have the biggest 'reputation' on several fronts. Whether it be the loudness, the high maintenance or the cuddly nature.

I think its great you are doing your research as its essential to getting the right species.

You should be aware of this though, suns are LOUD, not necessarily noisy, but LOUD. They are also very expressive and the more time you spend with them, the more quiet they are likely to be. Suns crave attention and cannot stand being ignored. So if you want a bird that will stick to you like velcro, a sun is a way to go. Just know that they are a lot of work. To me, its so worth it, but you ain't taking home a goldfish if you take home a sun.

Mambo is a great name, and I also felt the same when I saw my first Male Ekkie. Sounds like you learned well since he is now 24
I also have a tiel named Spike. How sweet of your daughter to get him for you
Great gift of Navi by your hubby as well, sounds like your family knows you well
I don't have Rock Pebblers or a Galah, but think they are gorgeous birds.

Welcome to you! My JoJo is very cuddlie, at times! But he is also content to just hang with me in the same area. Our mornings are always special! I end up late for work every day!

I love conures! My GCC was a complete and utter snuggler. I never had the pleasure of seeing a dusky or Crimson bellied, but I have been told the crimsons and duskies are similar.

But now my grey loves cuddles, weird for a grey but I'll take it!

I realize that many factors play in the birds personality. How they were weaned, food, environment and so forth. However, I do know that there some characteristics that may hold true to a certain species (IE.. rock pebblers don't like to be petted) Kaya, Kiki (the rock pebblers) and Kirby the galah will allow me to hug and kiss on their terms, however they do not like head scratches nor do they like fluff their feathers for a good rub like Spike my tiel does. I respect that, my eclectus Mambo never liked to be hugged or scratched either. He doesn't mind the occasional stroking like you would a dog or a cat while he sits on my lap. Maybe I have weirdos...lol

Either way I'm looking forward to having a conure... I got a 30 x 30 x 54 for it I hope that is big enough. Although, it will probably be a sleep cage since my birds are only caged when I'm not home or to sleep. I stay at home all day so they are out and about most of the day every day. If there is anything I need to know before getting into one I'd appreciate the advice. Thank you!

Your flock is absolutely gorgeous!

That size cage is a great size, especially as a sleep cage. I can't wait to hear which one you decide on!
