Hi every, My names Adam and i have just got myself a lovely little light blue ringneck parrot which im told is 10 weeks old, she has a ring on her and the guy i bought her off was a very genuine guy with some lovely parrots!

Because it was a 2 hour drive to get to him, i chose one from the pics and vids he sent me earlier on in the day for him to hold back for me but when i got there and saw the one i now have i could not help myself but change my mind which meant taking her from a smaller cage to her new big home which i also bought from him :)

Now the cage she was in was quite a small cage, she then got put into her bigger cage last night but it only came with a perch and 4 feeding/drinking pots, so this morning me and my partner went shopping and treated her to some fancy new toys and made her home a little better.

Just a question if anyone can help me out, whenever i put my hands near her cage she backs away and goes to the other side of the cage(i never rush near her, i take it really slow as i dont want to scare her), i left the doors on her cage open for around an hour and even with me calling her she didnt budge. Now i understand its new to her and she has to settle into her new home but last night and this morning she was shaking a little although it wasn't cold in the room its quite a warm room if anything so it couldnt of been because she was cold.

What would people suggest to do? as i dont want to pressure her into anything or be too full on with her and scare her but i dont want to leave her to herself too much as she is really tame atm and ive been told if you don't bother with them they are hard to keep tame as such.

Is there any other signs i should be looking out for and is it normal for a 10 week old to be acting the way she does?

Anyway, meet Molly.... :whiteblue:

Precious little thing! And welcome to the forums, glad you found us!

As far as her behavior, it's not at all uncommon for some birds to be very shy when they come in to a new environment. The best thing you can do is just take things at her pace, and allow her to warm up to you.

A great way to do this can be as simple as sitting next to her cage talking and reading to her. offering her treats if she will take them from you or through the bars can be another great bonding excercise. If she is backing away when you reach to give her a treat, maybe try getting some long millet that you can offer to her from a bit more of a distance.

Here is a great link for tips on bonding and building trust with your new girl.

RIP Gandalf and Big Bird, you are missed.
Welcome to the forums, Adam!! Molly is a beauty and seems to have gotten a great start. Acclimating and bonding is a slow process. Hopefully members with IRN experience will offer some great advice!

Hi Adam and welcome to the forum!
Molly is gorgeous, I love her colour!
The link provided by SirEdwin is an awesome one.
We have a very scared IRN right now, and have just been sitting by his cage, talking softly to him to get him used to us.
I'm really happy you joined us and I can't wait to hear more about Molly!

What a beautiful baby!

No, that is not normal for a well socialized bird at that age, but it is normal for a frightened bird. Take lots of time to bribe her and get to know her :)

Here is a special tip for IRNs specifically; take your fingers away. For some reason they seem to be especially fearful of fingers. Keep your fingers together to form w solid fist or flat hand whenever possible. Seems silly, but it's very helpful in my experience.

Thanks for the feedback guys! not really had chance to get on here much since i joined yesterday unfortunately.

When i got her home on sunday, she was pretty scared whenever my hand was near the cage or if i was too close but today ive been right by the cage and she hasn't really moved away at all so im very pleased with that, i don't want to speak too soon or rush and get ahead of myself but i feel like she's a little more comfortable with me now than she was 2 days ago... i know it might take a while as to how young she is but im sure we will get there! I have also noticed, yesterday morning i was talking to her for a good 10-15 mins, i only turned my back to my computer to introduce myself on here and she made a pretty loud 'sqwark' type noise which im guessing was to grab back my attention - although some say stop them doing it, it was a relief to hear it as she's really quiet since ive known her and just sits on her one perch and ive not seen her go to the bottom or top of her cage yet.... baby steps though ay!

Absolutely love the link SirEdwin shared with me, seem's really helpful i have saved it as a bookmark to keep taking tips from it :)

And an even bigger bonus, my partner loves her too! (she was so scared of birds and was against the idea of me getting a ringneck, but she doesn't shut up about her now she has realised they are not going to hurt her! haha - win win situation for me now!)

That's awesome! Nothing better than having a partner who catches the fever with you! And it sounds like you and molly are getting her over a larger fear of birds in general, which is extra awesome!

It definitely sounds like she is starting to get more comfortable with you, and her environment, and you have an absolutely great mindset with everything. It can be extra hard to be patient when they are new and all we want is them to love us as much as we love them.

As far as the little squawk, nothing wrong with that in my mind at all! For me personally the only vocalizations I try not to encourage are constant screaming. Otherwise, I think i might go crazy if my flock wasn't chatting throughout the day.

Keep up the great work! And thanks for the update!
