Hello All

Hey there brand new to the forum! Im in Tampa, FL, after researching and spending time with CAGs and YNA ive decided on getting a weaned YNA from birdfarm.com located in Homosassa,FL in the Spring time when babies are available! Just wanted to get acquainted with a forum as I'm sure i'll have questions between now and then and help along the way as this will be my first parrot. I have a dog, 2 cats, a wife (any help with how to train her would be lovely as well) LOL JK. Always had exotic reptiles but never really took any interest in birds until a friends african grey jumped on my shoulder and after spending time with him i learned how incredible these animals can be! Looking forward to talking and learning from everyone! thanks for checking my post and if you have any websites/books/tips of your own i should read/buy about owning a YNA please let me know!

For now, please do not waste your money on books or DVDs, most of what is out there is a complete rip off and you will be just disappointed!
You should look up henpecked, on this site, he is right out by you and he is a breeder of Amazons and they don't come anymore highly recommended than him! He could also hook you up with a sweet dear that could desperately use a new home!

Welcome ! I'm new as well (just joined yesterday) and this forum is great, so I'm sure you'll enjoy it too! Finally people that are as crazy about parrots and won't roll eyes when you go on and on about them ! And you can learn stuff too.. which is amazing. And as is the custom: pics of birdie?

My advice, in addition to all the great ideas above... take any issue or topic which interests you, use the Search Tab and then read about it. I do that a lot, still. The people here are an amazing source of information, advice, and support. I'm glad you found this place!

Thank you so much! I have been researching for a few months now and will continue to do so! I want to be prepared as i possibly can! Waiting to hear from one of the members Henpecked as he's apparently a breeder and in Florida so thats a big thing having a close by reputable breeder who can help guide me through everything from bringing the bird home all the way through training, any issues, etc... Welcome and be welcomed. You have stumbled upon on of the greatest sources of info about parrots there is on the web. Believe me, I am a member of just about every one of them.... this is the source , the veritas e veritas, and as a bonus, the people are super nice and funny to boot.

So why a yellow nape Amazon?

If you have done your homework, you know about parrots 'picking' a human? Getting a parrot thru a breeder who is not local kinda negates that from happening. Lots and lots of folks get their parrots shipped to them, but if Henpecked or another breeder is within driving distance, it could be an opportunity for that magical 'click' to happen. Is it crucial or critical for that o happen? Certainly not. I've had 5 parrots over my lifetime... it only happened once, and I loved each and every one of them.

And dont count out adopting an older bird, for 3 reasons; there aree so mand surrendered and rescued parrots out here that need loving forever homes; older birds are over their hormone laced , personality swapping, confusing changes that come with puberty and lastly that 'picking' I spoke about above can happen with older parrots too! If there is a parrot rescue or sctuary near you, you might like to volunteer there for awhile. Not only gives you first hand experience working with parrots, but also with different species and their inherent quirks.

What ever you decide, this forum will be an invaluable source of support and info. Welcome, friend.

Thanks for the post! I have spent some time with various species and I suppose I settled on a YNA because I really like their personality and maybe the challenge? I would like to find a somewhat close breeder for support and so I can visit the birds and possibly find one that "picks" me as well. I would like for that to happen but it's not totally necessary for me. I really like the volunteer idea so ive reached out to the local parrot sanctuary and offered my assistance in anyway! I'm very excited to have joined the forum and just by browsing and using the search bar I've already learned so much! I hope to continue learning and growing so i can have a happy healthy parrot!
