Hello I got my green cheek conure about 5 months ago when he was only a month or so old (so I was told) recently I've been noticing all his tail feather falling out leaving only the stick looking part left! Is this normal or should I be concerned ? Help!

Welcome to the forums, nice to have you with us!!

Difficult to know what is happening with the tail feathers. Are the rest of the feathers normal, and what sort of activity level do you see. Some birds are very rough on their feathers, though something in addition to playfulness is likely. Were they normal previously and are you noticing something different? Has your bird had a an avian vet well-check?

Sorry to ask so many questions, but it will help our members try to give some advice!

Thank you for the reply!
They were normal when I first got him/her but gradually started to look scruffier as time went on. Activity level seems to be normal, and we have never been to a vet!

Can you share with us the foods your conure is served and what he actually eats? (can be a huge difference!) Notice anything unusual with the droppings?

Bathing is helpful to maintain healthy and clean feathers, though some birds absolutely hate water. Hopefully you are dealing with something very minor. Please keep in mind a well-check by an avian vet can be a great help.

He eats a mixture of these two but definitely goes for the seed more then the fruit blend but I've read it is healthier so he does seem to eat some! Then I do fruit and veggies in a separate bowl every day main foods being (broccoli, apples, carrots, peppers, grapes etc)

I will take him eventually for sure !

Fresh vegetables/fruits are the most important part of the diet, followed by pellets and seed. Of course seed is generally the go-to food of choice for most birds! I haven't had a conure for many years, so perhaps other members can advise whether a cockatiel diet is best.

A helpful suggestion is to remove all seed/pellets when fresh food is given. Given the choice, they will go for the equivalent of "burgers and fries!" This helps motivate the desire for the healthier items. Depending on your location temperature, the fresh foods will last anywhere from a few hours to a good part of the day.

Hello! :07:
I have the same thing occuring with my little boy!
But what i have discovered is that what is causing the feathers to look scruffy is when your bird is clinging onto the side of their cage, their feathers may point slightly downward, right through the bars! As the feathers rub against the bars, the beautiful feathers flay :17:

I believe this is normal, but i would just check with a professional JUST in case! Better to be safe than sorry!

Good luck with your baby and their lil' feathers!
