Hi everyone,

I am planning to move with our little munchkin to another EU country. However my conure would need a certificate of origin (birth certificate) and ring number for me to register him in the new country.
I have been given our conure through a friend of mine who couldn't keep him as he didn't get on with the other birds. Unfortunately he did not have a ring and my friend had no birth certificate for him.
Has anyone got any idea how I could go about this ? Its driving me insane as he has become such a massive part of our family and I really don't want to loose him just because of a missing birth certificate.
If anyone has any ideas please help us !!!!

I thought the EU was open borders? Just drive across at a deserted place. Or smuggle him in. Sorry - too much of the rebellious Yankee in me maybe.

I am worried that if he needs a vet or someone complains he will be taken away

Can you contact the friend you got him from and see what breeder or shop he came from? Most breeders do keep records, I know I have a notebook where I always wrote the birth date, band number, color/mutation, parents, and name of the buyer of the budgies I bred. That might be the only way to find out if he originally had a band and it was just lost, or to see if it's possible for the breeder to get you a certificate.

There has to be a way to do it, this can't be an uncommon thing, that a pet bird is rehomed and has no leg band or birth certificate, some birds have multiple owners, so I'm sure there has to be a way. I'd try tracking it through the previous owner to the breeder, and if that doesn't work I'd call the authority in the country you're moving to and explain that your bird was rehomed and has no records, and ask what to do.

Same thing I was thinking.

This falls under "No Good Deed Goes Unpunished!"

Your friend, has likely gotten the Parrot from the underground to save himself a few Euros. And has dropped this 'problem' on you. He is the one who is responsible for getting the information (paperwork). And, you need to push him with what he needs to do, like be honest with you!

There is a paper trial, very likely not very pretty and just as likely not legal. Push him 'hard' for answers and if he is unwilling to provide the information consider turning him in for being involved in the sale of Black Market Parrots. You may not in fact do it, but telling him that, it may get his attention and be more open to getting you information you need.

I am guessing that you have not had your Parrot into an Avian Vet and as a result have no medical paperwork that could at the very least act as some kind of 'weak' paper trail.

Did you give him money for the Parrot?

Hi,
yes I have taken our conure to an avian vet to get him checked out and my friend has not been responding since I started to push a bit more. Might have to dig a bit deeper. Thank you very much :O(

Great to hear that your Parrot has seen an Avian Vet! That at least provides a 'limited statement of ownership.' See your AV regarding a reference and name of an AV near where you are moving. Prior to (within two or three of the move date) have a complete medical examination to and better beyond what is required for normal transport between EU Nations.

Double check that restrictions are not still in place from last Fall!!! Understand, regardless of paperwork, there are still EU Nations that are having outbreaks of Avian Flu and those Nations remain shutdown!

Have a detailed discussion with your Avian Vet regarding your situation and ask for your AV recommendations.

Regarding your 'friend,' take a bigger friend (size and heart) with you and go see your 'friend' and have a face to face!

So very sorry that what you believed to have been a friendship was anything but!

I know someone who took a cat overseas from the US, and then ran into trouble coming home. Needed paperwork, vet check, etc none of which was possible. They had a receipt for a rug, written in Arabic, and made a copy with "Some Veterinary Clinic" in English near the bottom of the letterhead. Maybe scrawled the word "cat good" on the body. Nobody bothered to do more than wave it away, supposedly. Of course that is not legal.
