Hi all! I'm a future bird owner, we are hoping to get our setup and bird around april/may. I used to have budgies as a kid but never had any other birds as an adult although I love all animals.

We recently had a friend stay with us for 6 months who had a green cheeked conure. The conure immediately took to me, and me to him...it was love at first sight! I train animals so I helped my friend teach him a variety of tricks and had started teaching him to talk.

He recently moved out and I cry with how much I miss that bird...so my boyfriend who previously said absolutely never to birds said ok you can get a conure :p

Despite knowing the basics of what to feed them and how to care for them (I babysat his conure a lot) I'm still not sure what species I want and what my setup will be. Expenses aren't really an issue but I still want to minimize costs wherever possible as I have a special needs bulldog as well :D

So...I'm here to research and learn :)

Are you looking for something smaller / around the size of a conure or something bigger? What kind of traits do you want in a bird? Maybe look for rescues near you and see if you can visit the birds and see what you like.

Sorry, I meant what species of conure :) I have it narrowed down to 4: Maroon bellied is the top of my list but I can't find anyone around here that works with them. Peach Fronted, red masked, and dusky are on my list as well.

I'm trying to avoid known nippy species as I already have scars from my friends green cheek (I do know I will have to train this out with any bird I get, but I'd like to not be coming from too far behind in terms of species nippiness :D).

I'm big into the snugglers, as well as the overall species friendliness. Talking is not required, in fact the quieter the better (I don't consider green cheeks loud, though apparently I'm crazy according to everyone I know).

I'm disabled and don't drive, so I am trying to maximize the research I do before I go out to visit irl

ps, is it feasible for a new bird owner to rescue? I do train animals, so I'm not too concerned about training a rescue (I used to rescue a whole variety of exotics, I do not anymore due to health), however, would a rescued bird bond to me the same way? my friends green cheek was awfully friendly with me even though I wasn't his "person" and snuggled with me all the time. I consider that bird a friend not a pet if that doesn't make me sound totally crazy :p

Welcome to the forums, thanks for joining! You'll find much information within our group and many members who can answer questions about specific conures.

Rescuing a bird is a most noble gesture! Not sure whether rescues require prior bird experience, but we have a few involved members who may be able to share their requirements.

I have a Sun Conure and she is cuddly and amazing and not as loud as her species usually is. She is 5 months old and doesn't talk yet. Getting her is the best decision I've made in a long time. She entertains herself with toys and I probably play with her about 2 to 6 hours a day and have her in her play gym sitting next to me a lot too. Just give a Sun Conure enough attention and they shouldn't be too very loud. She is not too nippy and is potty trained and smells like popcorn. Hope this helps.

Welcome to the forum! A great place to research and learn!

Conures are the best! I sued to own a Jenday that was the coolest bird, They're so sweet and affectionate! Good luck with your search!
