Hi everyone.

I have 3 birds, 2 Umbrella Cockatoo's and a Timneh African Grey.

They are really new to our household. I had a Congo African Grey prior but he passed away just before Thanksgiving. I was so devastated, he was my best friend. We decided in January to look for another Grey, I can not believe how many people out there that are trying to scam you.

I answered and ad on Craigslist and when we went down to see Charlie, we immediately got along. His owner was so excited, she had several other people out to see him/her but she knew right away we were the right family. She had other birds besides Charlie so we decided shortly after that I wanted her to have another bird to socialize with.

Again back to Craigslist, my husband saw an ad for a lady giving away 2 Cockatoo's. The reason she said she was giving them away is because the male had a prolapsed cloacal and has had it repaired twice and it did it again, and she knew he was going to need surgery. I don't really think she cared who took them, she wanted them gone. Reason is, the first person who called she was going to give them to them. She wouldn't let us come see them until they backed out.

I researched what a prolapsed cloacal is, contacted several people and the answers I got were not very promising, but I still wanted to see them. I was shocked when I got there, I thought I was going to see a pair of Goffin Cockatoo's, but they were Umbrella Cockatoo's. I had always said I would never get a Umbrella because of the screaming, feather plucking and just the high maintenance. But when I saw them, I fell in love, plus I was really afraid of who might get them since she really wasn't looking for the "right" family for the birds. She had 4 Grey's, and Amazon, Cocktails, and some other small birds like finches.

Home we went, they took to my husband I right away. I spoke to a vet about 2 hours away that was willing to look at him and was very reasonable. She was great, she felt she could help him, but there were going to be some changes to prevent it from happening again. Better diet, no problem and separate cages. What she felt was the problem was hormones. He would get very excited and it would prolapse. Oh boy, they are very bonded and I wasn't sure how that was going to work.

It has been about 3 weeks since the surgery and he is doing great. They are in separate cages but I let them out together when I am able to supervise. So far so good. Charlie, well she is the Alpha bird, they are scared of her, surprising since she is half their size.

He has had the surgery and is doing great. The really strange thing is, Chevy hates my husband. She has bit him, she hisses and fluffs up when she see's or hears him, she has even dive bombed him several times. He is getting good a dodging her. Don't know what change, it was almost like overnight. My son came over and she was loving all over him, so I don't think it's men, I think she is jealous, but Charlie has really taken to him so that's good.

Sorry for the long introduction, I have been looking at this site for a while and finally decide to participate.

Linda, Charlie :grey:, Chevy :white1: and Frenchie :white1:

Welcome and be welcomed. Good on you for homing these 3 needy parrots. Tons of very experienced folks on here, with some expert advice to be found ( not from me though). Where are you located, and more details bout the living conditions of the parrots will help people help you. And pics, pics, pics, we love 'em, those and videos!
