Hello from Seattle(ish)!

Hi! I'm a new member and thought I should introduce myself. My name is Inger and I live in Everett, WA - just north of Seattle.

I don't have a parrot yet, but I'm on two waiting lists for baby parrotlets. In the past, I've lived with Budgies, a cockatiel, lovebirds, and one Ringneck parakeet. I did not put the time and effort into any of those birds that I should have and did not understand the level of commitment they deserved. Now, much older, with my daughter grown and finding myself living alone for the first time in my life, I am ready to share my life with a bird. I've chosen Parrotlets because they're said to be possibly the quietest of parrots and also they're small and darling. I live in a small apartment - basically a living room and a large bedroom set up as a second living space, so small and quiet are both important!

I have shared custody of 2 Chihuahuas (I get them on weekends). When they're with me, Future Bird will have to spend more time in his cage, although always in the same room with us, and when it's his turn to have all of the attention, the dogs will be secured elsewhere. I have a nice, roomy cage for FB's main cage and will get a slightly smaller one to put in the bedroom/TV room.

I've been watching training videos on YouTube, reading about proper diets, researching cookware, putting toys and books in my Amazon cart. My BFF keeps several birds and has the name of an avian vet for me.

Now I just need Future Bird to be hatched!

Welcome to the Parrot Forums!

There are a number of Parrotlet owners here and I hope one will come along soon. As they would be more likely to address any question you may have regarding that species.

Please understand that the greater the need for a quiet Parrot, the more likely it is that yours' will not be so inclined.

I know near nothing about Chihuahuas and will let other comment in that regard. That said, it is common to want a solid door separating them from your future Parrotlets.

Welcome! It's so good that you are getting settled in advance. You'll find the members here to be so supportive and helpful - I don't know what I would have done without this place.

Welcome! Parrotlets are darling little birds, but they do have BIG attitudes. I have a couple of breeding pairs, one sitting on eggs now. They are quieter, than say, my ekkies, but they do make noise. They cannot scream like a bigger parrot, they are physically incapable of it, but they can get on a chirping marathon that can get quite loud, just so you are aware. However, I love the little things, they are like little feathered balls of dynamite. Huge birds in itty bitty bodies. Again, welcome to the forums, you'll find it full of wonderful people and I hope you feel at home soon.

Having shared custody of dogs will bring a challenge for a reliable separation, but at least you will have the bulk of the time without this concern.

Thanks everyone for the welcome! I'm glad to be here - the more support I have the better [emoji4] I know very well what a big animal in a small body is about - Chihuahuas are 60 lbs of dog in a 6 lb package and they have a stupidly fearless nature. Sounds like everything I've read about Parrotlets as well.

As for noise - chirping and chattering is fine, it's the screaming I (and my neighbors) can do without, and since they're incapable of screaming, we should be fine.

Dogs and Future Bird will never be in the same room unsupervised, and I can't imagine a scenario where they would both be unsecured even under supervision. I expect a fair amount of barking while the boys get accustomed to another family member and am prepared to introduce them in short spurts until this dies down.

I *am* looking forward to having a little buddy at home all the time. I am an animal person, and my home isn't quite right without a wee beastie in it.

I don't have first hand knowledge of parrotlets. Have you looked at green cheeks or other pyrrhura conures? They are capable of screaming, but in my (limited) experience, they rarely do. Mine really only gets loud if the TV is really loud.
Just wanted to add that in case you didn't know.
However, the parrotlets do seem to be the chihuahua's of the parrot world! Check out "Flock Talk" on YouTube. She has some great videos about her parrotlets.

I live in a very small apartment. Future Bird has a great, roomy cage for a tiny parrot, but I don't have the room to accommodate a bigger bird. I did look briefly at GCCs because I'd heard they can be sweet and quiet but they're too big. [emoji4] I will definitely check out Flock Talk - thanks for that!
