I have a Pineapple conure named Mango
My name is Sherlyn and I have a charming crazy Pineapple conure named Mango (my son named him). Mango was suppose to be a pet for my ten year old son when I got him about a year ago. It turned out that Mango had other plans and attached his little feathered self to me pretty much 24/7 lol. I had a huge conflict of interest though because my heart belonged fully to a tiny Sparrow named Skeeter. Skeeter was rescued from some nasty kids who tryed to kill her five years ago and she became my constant companion and proof that God had not abandoned my kids and I because I had a real live sparrow on my shoulder who even when given the choice to be free if she wanted too always chose to stay with me even on trips to CA and several other states as the first in the world registered theropy sparrow 🤗!! Skeeter was one of a kind and just one month ago passed away and my world came crashing down! I was unable to breath afterwards! That little tiny personality packed bird was part of every minute of the day! Every step I took every move I made was always with skeeter in mind because she had always refused to be in a cage. Skeeter lived free with me and she was pary of our family just like another human! She will never be replaced. But from that day Mango senced that I needed him even more than ever and he sorta side hopped into my heart in a very huge and also very entertaining way as im sure any of you conure owners understand lol!
I am very excited to be able to join here and learn how to be the best conure mama! Sorry if this has rambled on a bit. And just an upfront warning I am a lousy speller and spell check doesn't always catch everything lol
One other thing about me is that I also had the first ever registered service animal that was a rooster!!! Lol 😂 I am the mama to the famous serama bamed Rico!! I used to take him to all kinds of nursing homes all over to visit and make people smile and laugh. We are on youtube under 333Chickmom.
Rico wore chicken duapers of course and he was a house rooster when it was too cold outside. Rico hac his own commercial agent and touched many hearts.
Sadly Rico also passed two months ago. Rico was nine years old. He will also forever be part of me.
I am a single mama of three kidos inthe home and a self tailored artist.
We also have two horses. Two Great Danes (one is 11 years old) and a flying squirrel:) (mango loves to antagonize the Squirel expecially lol)

Ok goodnight and God bless

Welcome!
Glad you found us!
I want to learn more about all your darlings... maybe especially Rico! I love roosters. Do you have a link or pictures or... I'd love to see/read anything, actually! What a character he must have been!

Yes RICO was the most amazing house roo ever!! I have lots of vids of him and my other Serama ( they are the smallest chicken breed that is not a bantam. They come from Malaysia and have only been in USA about 15 years.) on YouTube under 333Chickmom. Let me know if you can't find it. Also I'm on Facebook under Sherlyn Ukatz and there is a lot on Rico in my vids pics etc. I was part of a serama forum for quite awhile called SCNA. Serama out number cats and dogs as house pets in Malaysia and can cost up to $1,500 and more due do their popularity in table top shows. You can see many vids on YouTube under Serama topic. I absolutely LOVE chickens and know they have much bigger personalities and are much smarter than many people give them credit for.
I have an awesome friend that custom makes chicken diapers also which is a MUST if taking them places like nursing homes and hospitals etc . My Serama worked with dementia and Alzheimer's patients mostly. There is nothing like a tiny chicken/rooster in a diaper to make an Alzheimer's patient open up and tell the most amazing stories!! I use to capture and video and pictures of those moments for the families of these dear people. It gave them a gift of being able to see their mom/dad/family member present and as they remembered them! They would just wake up and laugh and smile and hold RICO for hours!!
He is greatly missed along with the others I had for many years.

My grandparents in Texas always had a little flock of Bantams when I was a toddler/kindergartner, and I would visit over summer vacation and LIVE with them in the yard. There's no feeling in the world like hugging a chubby, fluffy chicken/rooster who smells like dust and grass and sunshine.
Thanks for putting those memories into my head today!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

RIP Gandalf and Big Bird, you are missed.
Welcome to the forums, Sherlyn, what a wonderful introduction! Companion animals are a huge part of your life and will likely be well taught to your children.

I noticed your mention of an 11 year old Great Dane. That is fairly unique and a testament to great care. My nearly 10 year old Dane developed "bloat" a few weeks ago and was saved by an amazing surgical team. I'm sure you know the methods to prevent bloat, and we follow them all. Just a weird stroke of bad luck.

Thank you :)

Yes I know Bloat well!! My 11 year old dane got bad bloat in the middle of the night and was literally dieing in front of me! Im so glad I had a year before educated myself on bloat and purchased the tubing and tape roll ect needed to save her life! It was still very scary because no matter what you never really are expecting something like that to happen and so fast! Long story short she was rushed to emergency where I was told that if I had not done what i did she would never have made it to the vet. She now has her stumach stappled thankfully. We just had another great dane pass away at age 12. She was active and coherent all the way to the end.
Great danes are truly the best
