Hi everyone, I have kept birds for around ten years starting with zebra finches but quickly moving on to parrot finches then bourke parakeets and elegant parakeets.
I currently keep Bourkes and Elegants in a mixed aviary along with canaries diamond doves and a couple of society finches. my aviary is a shed with a flight (8m long x 2.3m high x 1.4m wide). I also have a smaller aviary in which I keep Gouldian finches and Owl finches.
I am not a serious breeder of birds otherwise no doubt I would keep pairs separate and use double breeders. I simply love to see the birds flying in their home out of my kitchen window - I am an advocate of providing flights for birds, after all they are meant to fly and not simply hop between perches. I have had a successful breeding year (16 Elegents, 8 Bourkes and 14 canaries). Gouldians are over their moult and coming in to breeding condition. My sheds and flights are heated by temperature controlled tubular heaters. I look forward very much to reading comments and contributing if I feel I am knowledgeable enough on the subject.
