Hello all,

I'm completely new to all of this - 15+ years in IT field & I never did any forum's, Now I'm new to the bird life & I am, maybe We are in over our heads.

I am Bob, wife is Joy & she wanted to rescue a QP from her mother who rescued it from a widow, QP's her name is "Suezoo" she is around 20 years old. Now the problem is while we were looking, gathering & buying items for said Suezoo we came across a lovely YNA, his name is "Yoda" he's 16 years old.

Now it was Yoda's first day of his new lonely life, but as soon as I walked by him he adopted me immediately, which was really weird for everyone, especially me. I had never handle any bird, (I'm 61). Well we put a hold on him & returned the next day to see & make sure that it wasn't a fluke. So we rescue him that day bring him home & start working on training me. Mostly all good for a couple of weeks except one main thing. I had discovered that Yoda HATES the little squeaky thing that the dogs always ripe out of their toys. I usually keep one around because it gets the Doberman's attention when all else fails (very rare).

Ok, fast forward almost 2 months later & off to Mom's for rescue #2 Suezoo who by the way I also know absolutely nothing about, just that she is a QP that makes a lot of noise that was not appreciated by all members of the house. So at this point I''m guessing that most of you folks know where I'm going with this. I don't know if all QP's have the same vocal sounds, or to what degree they chirp, this little girl sounds a whole lot like a squeaky toy & if she's not being held she can just go on & on forever.

Long story finally coming to an end - Yoda has now completely turned on Joy & myself, mostly me. Refuses to step up & is in a constant state of aggression, Suezoo is stressed with all that's just changed, but is perfectly fine if I'm holding her close to my heart, which of course I have to do in another room because Yoda doesn't miss a thing. We are trying to spend time with Yoda, but he won't let us near him. Other than giving him a shower today I am running out of ideas.

What I will say is that I'm not going to give up on either one of them.

Thanks for reading.
Bob

So the above section is from the Quaker Parrot forum which is were I started out on requesting info, but now we are continuing our search for knowledge here. If anyone has any suggestions I would gladly listen. Also we just received our 2 video's (Good Bird) in the mail that Joy ordered, they are by Barbara Heidenreich, hope they can help.

Welcome! It sounds as if you have the beginnings of a flock that don't yet realise that's what they are. Both birds are in strange circumstances, place, routines, people, another 4 legged pet with fur! They are both mature birds who may struggle with change.

Yoda was happy having you to himself and what has happened? An interloper! So he's not happy any longer but really it's just another change to get used to. I'm no expert but will certainly vouch for others on here. I would also recommend that you read until your eyes hurt as much info on here as you can. Look at the breed sections and training and behaviour.

Someone will be along I am sure to help. Good luck you did well to rescue these guys.

Hello and welcome!!!

Tons of great information here, and endless amounts of advice as well. I have no experience with these two species but I saw you have a Doberman -- I do, too! (they're awesome) -- and hopefully some more experienced members will post their help on this issue. As you have figured out already, birds are not like our canine companions that will do what we tell them to do, will come back when called, etc. They indeed have minds of their own and some are very choosey with their people, take offense very easily, or simply hate other birds altogether.

Stick around, read as much as you can, and you'll find a caring group here.

Yep my take is that Yoda is jealous over the new parrot. I dont know why you would get a second parrot, other then rescuing him, rarely does more parrots = more fun and nicer parrots. You want to keep Yoda as happy as possible, bites from a YNA are no joke. Other folks with multiple parrots will chine in here, eventually. We are a 1 bird house.

Bless you for taking these two in.

you are not in over your head.
you just lost your mind in the wonderful world of parrots.

i second the notion that you read everything you can on this forum.
I like books and spent a bunch of money to learn how to care for my birds,
but learned the most from this site, in real time from owners with day to day issues.

both of these birds have gone through huge changes.
And you've had them for such a short amount of time.

maybe you need to keep them in completely separate parts of house if you can...
then start from the beginning allowing them to bond, while having no concern for another bird?
slowly bring them together at meal time, snack time, sleep time...?

I hope you get good advice.

Good luck.
