Hi there!

I am soon to be the proud parent of a beautiful baby Sun Conure! I have never owned a bird before but I absolutely love them and cannot wait to bring her home. I am getting her cage ready, buying toys, perches, food, etc. Any advice or recommendations for a first conure owner? I attached a picture - the one looking up is mine. :)

Aw, so adorable! Welcome and congratulations :).

I'd recommend reading lots in the conure sub forum. They are such lovable birds and mine are both very sweet (usually lol) - you're going to love being owned by one!

My biggest recommendations would be to get her on a healthy diet early on, work on your trust bond, get her comfortable with the basics of training, harness train her while she's young (if you think you'll want to take her outside on a leash in the future)..... and love her to bits!

Hello and congratulations on a sweet baby sun!! I had a Jenday years ago and they are similar. Be prepared for some screeching!

My advice to you.. (great advice already given above)

-Get the biggest cage you can afford. The bigger, the better. Birds love their room and should be able to extend their wings comfortably in their cage without the edges touching the sides.

- Get him/her on a good, varied diet right away - pellets, fresh fruit and vegetables, cooked legumes and grains, a small amount of seeds, parrots love variety and often times have a favorite fruit or veggie they go crazy for! Stay away from the TOXIC foods like onion, garlic, rhubarb, alcohol, chocolate.

- Lots of bird owners make a CHOP for their birds (a mix of various fruits, veggies, legumes, grains prepared daily or frozen and portioned out). My thread on what I feed my birds is here, the CHOP Chronicles! (the pictures aren't there anymore but you get the idea with what I list)

- Think about what you want to train your bird to do and research all you can. Just like teaching a dog tricks, parrots can learn so many tricks. Most bird owners should teach their birds the basic Stepping up (bird steps up onto your finger), flight recall (bird flies to you when you call it) and bite pressure training (bird learns that biting hard is not permitted).

- Socialization is so important! Not only should your new conure be handled by you, but also by different people in your household and your friends. Lots of times birds like Suns have a potential of over-bonding to one person and treat everyone else like an enemy, but with proper socialization this can be prevented.

- You will fall in love! Enjoy it!! :)

Thank you everyone for the kind comments! I cannot wait to bring Bella home - we pick her up October 8th - this is from our visit this past Saturday.

We bought the cage, traveling cage, toys, perches, and cleaner. We are going to buy her food when we pick her up along with her treats. I'll also be buying a variety of fresh/frozen fruits and vegetables.

My beautiful and hilarious little parakeet, Strat, (short for the Stratacaster guitar, since he loved rock music) passed away a few months ago, after 7 years of fun and craziness. Just got an IRN!
Welcome, and holly cow! Look at how dang cute she is! :)

Very beautiful and looks to be happy being handled, seems like a good breeder. You shouldn't have many training issues, but a conure always does the unexpected, and that's the fun part!!!
