Hello all!
I recently adopted a gorgeous 6 year old, DNA-sexed male blue-headed pionus named Rookie. Though I am not new to the world of birds, having previously owned a cockatiel, budgie, and black-cheeked lovebird, Rookie will be my first "big" parrot as well as my first interaction with pionus parrots! Additionally, I plan to take on training Rookie as well (if he seems amiable to it).
So far Rookie is sweet but I see real potential for him to be a little stinker when he wants attention. Not once has he attempted to bite/lunge at me since I met him and took him home (something I hope stays as I learn his body language and he becomes more familiar with me and my boyfriend) though he can be quite the chatterbox and a little on the noisy side.
We aren't quite at the "step up" level yet. I know from previous interactions at the adoption place he knows how to but doesn't feel comfortable coming out of the cage I think. He does let me give him head scritches though and yesterday he simply ignored my finger and call to "step up" when previously he would move away from me.
I'm sure I'll end up posting lots of pictures of him and questions, so if there are any fellow pi owners or bird trainers who are open to bombardments of behavioral questions then I would greatly appreciate your time, expertise, and tutelage
