Hello everyone,

I just registered coz I have million questions that pop up everyday and this is the place which seems to have all the answers.

Am Ankitha from India and I have been #parronting two male sun conures Rio (6 months now, whom we got first when 4 months old) and then Coco (8 months old).
Coco is sweet and still getting used to us. Somehow he doesn't like our palm or fingers. Always stays on the shoulder or on the cage. Where as Rio is naughty and adorable and imitates me and says few words or atleast I think it sounds so [emoji16].

So for now this is my intro and I will shortly come up with doubts and questions
You can figure out the naughty one and the decent brother.

Welcome from the Midwest USA. Love the pics. And the post above is right, there are lots of Sun Conure owners here, I owned a Jenday years ago and they are similar.

Thank you everyone. Feels great to be here and to be heard mainly. So here they come.
1. Somehow Rio looks weak if I just put him on seed and pellet and fruit and veggies diet. Maybe he doesn't eat that much, I don't know. So I've started giving him some bird formula which he loooovessss every night and he seems to be growing now and it feels great to seem him like that.
So, is it okay if I feed him formula? Or is it dangerous? He's 6 months old.

2. How do I get coco to trust me? I have a feeling he likes me coz he every time I give him my shoulder he hops on but with the others- lots of gimmicks to be done [emoji23]. He doesn't like the gesture of my hands when I say step up nor he likes me/us touching him or petting him. He doesn't mind us cleaning his beak though. Once he's on the shoulder there is no way I can reach him to put him down or do anything. He just stays there and sometimes it's kinda scary too.
So what do I do?

It is okay to keep giving him formula if he enjoys and seems to thrive off it. My guess is that he was force weaned, meaning he was denied formula when he still wanted it. Keep up with the feedings at night until he refuses them, and that is when he is weaned. Keep trying to offer him new food, some seeds, pellets and fresh fruits and veggies. Many young (and older) birds also enjoy bird bread. It incorporates their favorites into a yummy muffin-like bread and most birds go crazy for it since its soft and has lots of tasty food in it. There are lots of recipes for it online, and its easy to make.

As for Coco not liking your hand/having a hard time getting him off your shoulder, sounds like you need to work on your trust-bond and training with him. It will simply just take some time for him to be more comfortable with your hands. Try offering him a favorite treat with one hand, and entice him to step up on another hand in order to get it. The key is to always make every interaction positive, and leave them wanting more! If he's afraid of your hands, work slowly to get him used to your hands by moving them slow around him and never behind or over his head so he won't bite/feel uncomfortable. Work with your hands where he can always see them, and go at his pace.

Also, yes by this point most young suns will have bits of yellow on their wings on the top, so if they don't have any yellow they may very well be Jendays, who also have orangish/red bellies.

The one in the box is Rio with the yellow at the back and the other one is Coco. So he is?

Questions:
1. Why does my coco keep pecking on the cage and also when he's on my shoulder? He did that on my shoulder when I was mixing food.

2. Coco does a dance which am trying to post and will work on it. What's that dance? Do they do that when they are angry or something? He lifts his head high with a long neck and does a 8 shape kinda and goes down or some movements like that. What is that?

3. Rio keeps flying down from the cage to the ground every time he's scared. Do you think that would hurt him or make him go mad or crazy? And sometimes Rio does a head twitch.. I put that up on Facebook and they said it looks like he's losing his balance and I don't know what that is. Am worried
