Green Cheek Conure
Hello everyone! I'm a new member of the parrotforums website, but I've been lurking this site for a couple of years now.
I've started wanting a bird for a companion about five years ago from now,
but I didn't have the opportunity to have one until I received one for Christmas just last year as a gift. She was a normal female cockatiel, but she passed away not too long ago suddenly in the night and a necropsy confirmed her death as a result of a heart condition due to bad breeding (she was purchased at a chain pet store when I wanted to look for breeders, but the person who bought her for me was looking for ease of access and low price, nobody was really at fault).

About a month ago I traveled all around my state visiting multiple bird breeders in search of a new companion to bring the personality back at home, and I fell in love with the sweetest green cheek conure I could have ever met. He hasn't been DNA sexed (the sex is not something I'm worried about) but we refer to him as a he. He's very snuggly and trusting (but he doesn't like to lay on his back anymore unless he can hold onto a finger)
and he's also very easy to please (somewhat nippy but which conures aren't?), but he has a lot of trouble learning "step up" because he grips the cage so tight that I don't feel comfortable pressing on his chest to get him to step on my finger because I'm worried he'll hurt his feet by hooking on the bars so tight.

He loves to be touched and he craves attention but we are still working on the "step up" command, so I don't know if I would consider him "tame" just yet.

He is very good about eating his food. He won't eat anything my cockatiel Juno would love (like bananas and oatmeal) but he's not picky at all about his dry food (which I think he actually prefers). Lately the only part he won't eat is the green pellets in the "Zupreem Fruitblend Flavor" mix, I guess he just doesn't like the color.

((I'm just pouring out all the boring details because that's what introductions are for.))

I've named him Mochi because his little cheeks are the same color as the rice flour snacks I love and I am expecting to form a long and happy bond with him.

What a cutie!! I originally set out to get a Cockateil myself, but I couldn't find any in my area (other than the chain stores). Then one day I met my GCC Yoda and fell in love. I never thought in a million years that any pet bird could be so sweet, so cuddly, so loving, so fun and so smart. I was expecting a pet more like a feathered hamster, but what I got was a little feathered ball of pure joy.

Welcome to you and your feathered ball of joy! :60:

RIP Gandalf and Big Bird, you are missed.
Welcome to the forums. My condolences for your loss of Juno. It is heartbreaking to know poor breeding robbed you of a beautiful and sentient companion.

GCCs are among the favorites of our members. You'll find many great stories and tips for enriching Mochi's life.

My beautiful and hilarious little parakeet, Strat, (short for the Stratacaster guitar, since he loved rock music) passed away a few months ago, after 7 years of fun and craziness. Just got an IRN!
Welcome! Sorry to hear about your cockatiel. Similar story to my little green conure Buddy, who i purchased from a mom & pops shop decades ago, and turns out he was sick. Vet said he had some disease and was probably not brought into the country through proper channels. Only made it a few months, but what a great happy and loving little guy! When ever I was at home, he was constantly with me! Singing, playing, or just sleeping on me.

Congrats on Mochi! He sounds like a real sweetheart, and I'm sure he'll get stepping up in no time. What a dang cute photo! :)
