Hello!

Meet Lala everyone! Lala is a 4 year old Goffin's cockatoo :white1: and the newest member of our family! She's very sweet, likes to be pet and loves to perch on top of her cage or cage door! We accidentally taught her to mimic coughing lol just on the way home from the shelter! Lol. Teaching is a process and she's still got to form a trusted relationship with us. She's super smart, a tad stubborn and is enamored with my husband, lol!

She's been through a lot in the last couple of days. She's just moved to a new place after a long car ride with new toys and cage. And unfortunately she's missing her best friend of 4 years, Spike, who passed away Friday night in front of her. She's in mourning amongst other feelings she's feeling as well, I'm sure. Spike had an injury at the shelter that we were told was ok and healed...but that night we noticed he wasn't doing well and before we could bring him to the vet the next day he was gone. 😢

Lala is a plucker and we are working on it...but of course her recent stresses don't help. Any advice on the subject is welcome. Lol.

We also have 3 medium/large dogs. At the moment while we are getting to know Lala she has her own room but unless we are at work we go in all the time and play music (we were told she lives Tom Petty and Black Sabbath and we realized she lives Guns N Roses), and get her dancing and pet her. We don't push it of course and we do give her some time alone. She goes in at night to her cage around 8 pm and we uncover her and open her cage back up around 7 am. It's a pretty good size room that we are working on making some climbing walls..get a gym or two in there. Get some bird friendly plants and potted trees ( I have to find out which soil is safe if any). Omg she'll love it! When she gets acclimated and starts listening to step up and down we would like to bring her to the living room to share or lives in there. (It's got the most traffic) but with the dogs up safe of course. When everyone is settled and comfortable worth everyone else we'd like to figure a way to safely get Lala's cage into the living room permanently but that's a while yet.

Anyway Im looking forward to meeting everyone!!

RIP Gandalf and Big Bird, you are missed.
Welcome to you and Lala! I'm sorry you lost Spike, Lala will need a bit of extra TLC. She's a beautiful Goffins!

Plucking is a complex syndrome and there can be many causes. Assume she had a well-check with a certified avian vet to rule out illness?

This thread explores plucking in great detail: http://www.parrotforums.com/behavioral/52217-plucking-search-answers.html

Looks like she's going to have a good life. I'd worry about the feather plucking but if you set him up in a hilton of his own room I'm pretty sure he'll get over it.

Just keep a close eye.

welcome!

Shame to hear about spike, saying that it's good (in a weird way) that she saw his corpse, just so she can understand what happened to him and he didn't abandon her.

Hopefully she'll pull herself together and give you some love, Not surprised she's a bit stressed and plucking what with everything. Some nice calm and fun should keep her from setting into the plucking ways

Honestly we didn't yet because they said shed been groomed about 6 months ago so we were thinking she was due and we were going to schedule everything at once...we were thinking it would be less stressful. The shelter said she was ok but I don't have"proof" she saw an avian vet so we were thinking we would get it all done in one go.

Thank you!

Welcome! Layla's a beautiful girl! I'm so sorry for your loss of Spike. I enjoyed reading your introduction and so happy you joined us. The bird habitat you are planning sounds amazing, please share the details.

Under the circumstances, I'm not surprised Layla is yanking feathers. Plucking is complicated with no quick fixes but with a wonderful new home and humans Layla has an advantage, hopefully with your help and support plucking will be a temporary phase.
