This is my first time with birds, I inherited 2 blue and gold macaws male Chico and female Chiquita (like the banana) from my veterinarian, I have an amazing setup for them. I've only had them for maybe a month and a half now. I've been reading and watching documentaries since having them. I noticed some things that grew concern and from what I understand this is "mating" season. I had put a wooden barrel in their cage prior and now it is the nesting box. I noticed her staying in the barrel alot more and my male chico is very aggressive right now when I come near her. I looked in the barrel a couple days ago and there was an egg and now there is 2 as of yesterday. I wasn't planning for this but it was all natural so I just want to make her as comfortable as possible. Are there any tips i should know? Should I cover the top of the barrel?should I leave the light on or off? do I need to put a heater in there? Should I put things in the barrel?.. if anyone knows anything, I am all ears. Thanks in advance.:blue: :blue:

RIP Gandalf and Big Bird, you are missed.
Welcome to the forums, and congratulations for proving the birds a home.

Two macaws as first birds will prove a tall order! They have the intelligence and curiosity of toddlers and can be extremely challenging - but outrageously rewarding!

Do you wish them breed and are you willing/able to assume responsibility for their offspring? Breeding is not a requirement for pair-bonded birds, and you can make them very comfortable and provide stimulating lives in the absence of a nest facility.

Chiquita in Spanish means small or little. Funny to name such a large bird "small" LOL.

I don't have any macaws but plenty of people on the forum do and will be full of good advise.

I would expect the male to be defensive in the situation you describe.
Raising babies is/can be a lot of work. I did it with Cockatiels and I am sure it's going to be more difficult with such a large bird.
Be sure to have everything on hand you might need before you need it.
scale, baby bird formula, thermometer, brooder, and someone that knows how to show you.
Parent birds don't always do what they need to do and sometime humans need to step in.

everyone here loves pictures, especially babies.

good luck
