Parrots
quaker and conure
i bought a green cheek conure from a man who was keeping it covered most of the time bc of the noise... the conure had its own cage which i am keeping it in. i thought my very friendly quaker would love a companion, but the quaker is jealous of any attention i show the conure. the conure is NOT hand friendly and i am at a loss as to how to get the conure friendly to me without upsetting the quaker. they are not enemies, but the are very separate in what they do . any help?

Welcome to the forum! Hang around a while, and you will definitely learn a lot more than you bargained for.

As for your birds getting along, most times it is just up to them. Like humans, they need time to adapt to big changes in their life. Don't expect them to be snuggle buddies right away. Give them awhile before you even think there is something wrong. Parrots are prey animals in the wild...most are naturally suspicious of new things.

Welcome to the forum :)

First, I'd like to point out that you should keep the two away from each other for atleast 30 days, in seperate rooms (preferably separate floors in your home), for a quarantine period to protect your birds from airborn diseases, also- you need to take your new fid (Fid= feathered kid) to the vet (also your Quaker if you havent already done so). I would guess that his previous owner did not take him/her to the vet much (or at all) considering he/she was kept in a covered cage all day. Now, its gonna take a long time for these two to like eachother- that said, there is a very large possibility that they won't like each other at all, and that you will need to divide your time between the two parrots, making sure that you spend enough time with both of them. It's alot of work.

Here are a few links on quarantine and introducing your two birds:

Good luck :)

P.S- Good on you for rescueing your new Conure.
