Hi everyone.
I have just got a beautiful blue irn, Rio, about 4 weeks ago. He is 3 months old, well 4 now. He seemed to settle in really quickly from what i have read. No flapping around when we approach the cage. Ate on the first day and in front of us on the second. From about the sixth day he took some apple from my hand inside the cage through a feeding hatch. I have tried to open the door to give him treats but he flapps about so i backed off from that for now. His wings aren't clipped and i don't want to but really want to let him out of the cage. Should i wait until I've got him to step up? I'm worried if i let him out he might hurt himself or i won't be able to get him back in his cage. Feels like I'm not getting any further on. Am i being to impatient or are there any tips on what to do next? Please help!

Rio (Yellow sided conure) sadly no longer with us
yes I would keep him in until you can get him stepping up but on a perch instead of hands. for some reason Ringnecks can be funny about hands, just keep offering treats and get him used to the idea that you are a good thing to have around. Just take baby steps to get him to open up to you.

Once he gets okay stepping up on a stick let him out and just let him do his thing when out, only coming to the rescue if you're needed. It'll help you in the long to do so and let him come to you once out

Hi, thanks for the advice. Didn't think of using a stick. Just had a breakthough after posting. I have managed to get him to take sunflower seeds from me instead of big chunks of apple. I've withdrawn them from his food as he seems to love them. He even lets me open the door and go in to give them to him. Just when I thought I was getting nowhere. 😁 Thanks for the link i will take a look. Any other tips would be greatly appreciated. 👍

Hi, thanks for the great links, some great advice there. I had already started with clicker training, think he's getting the idea. Rio seems to come on a little everyday now. He has stepped onto the stick twice. Yay! 👍I'm so happy! Hopefully will be able to let him out of his cage soon. 🤞

Re: Help desperately needed! With taming ringneck.

Hi, An update and help needed. Training with Rio was going really well. I have been target training and he was responding well, managed to get him to step outside of the door to a T perch mounted there. He even stepped onto my arm once. But that's where my problem started. After he stepped on my arm he freaked and flew across the room. I didn't want to scare him further so let him do his own thing, he managed to get back on top of his cage and was contented there, so i let him be. It got late so i had to get him back in, He flew about and ended up on the floor so had to throw a towel over him to get him in. It didn't seem to faze him all was good. The problem is now he's decided he likes being out so when I'm trying to train him he flys out and sits atop his cage. (where he wont let me near him) He will take an occasional treat. I put his treats in his cage and he does now eventually go back in but i don't know how to train him further as I'm trying to get him hand tame and can't really do that with the door closed. Really stuck now! Please help!!!!

Have you tried training through the cage bars?

How well does he target?
