Bingo - 5-6 year old Amazon parrot
Hey everyone! My name is Jesse, I'm 19, and as of May 5th of this year, I became a bird owner.

His name is Bingo, he is between 5-6 and is a yellow-naped Amazon parrot. When I met Bingo, we were in New Jersey at a mom-and-pop shop called "Birds By Joe". I highly recommend them for supplies, cages, and birds. They are knowledgeable and very open to helping you out. I went expecting to find an African Grey to take home, but I soon learned that I couldn't provide that level of attention while working two jobs. I decided to go for something that can be in a cage a bit longer while I was out but I could still love and play with when I came home. Joe recommended an Amazon, and most of the ones I saw were either known to be mean or already sold.

I had almost given up hope, but then I found Bingo in the front of the store on display. Joe mentioned Bingo had a strong hate for men, and Bingo proved that with a few bites to him as he opened the cage. I went over to the cage and tried calling his name. Bingo was sitting on the perch quiet as can be. But when Joe and my mom walked off to check other options, Bingo was more than happy to chirp and step up. After a bit of petting, I even got a few "Hello!"s. I was more than smitten and knew he was the one.

Within seconds of leaving the store, Bingo showed his true colors. He whistled, screamed, and spoke plenty of fun phrases. More than I thought he'd know. He's now been home just over a week and I couldn't imagine life without him. He hasn't been the kindest to anyone else in the house, biting and causing my mom and other family members to bleed. But when it's just me, Bingo lights right up and steps up to cuddle on my shoulder or in my arms.

I made this account to ask small questions I'll have while raising him and learning about being a parrot owner. It's been a lot of work in this past week, but I'm happy to do it for my little baby <3.

Welcome and come on in.

Bingo is beautiful and it's always best when your Fid chooses you instead of the other way around.

Welcome to Parrot Forums and within Parrot Forums, the Amazon Forum!

At the very top of the Amazon Forum are two Threads, highlighted in light blue! Please take the time to sit next to your YNA or with him on you so you can see each other and read to him the Thread: Understanding Amazon Body Language. Read it several times, until you know it like your first language. As time passes, your Nape will add his own signals and movements. But you really need the basics locked-in.

The other Thread is: I Love Amazons - ... This is a huge Thread will over 30 Segments that address the Loving and Living with Amazons.

Welcome to the Wonderful World of Amazons! The Place that Amazons Rule!

There is tons of other information within the Amazon Forum and the many other Forums here within Parrot Forums.

Welcome!

Welcome! Good for you for being willing to change your plans based on what’s important for the bird. Sounds like Bingo is lucky to have found you. Sailboat already gave you the only advice you need-read his threads. He is our resident Amazon expert and snob.

Can’t wait to learn more about both of you.

"Joe mentioned Bingo had a strong hate for men, and Bingo proved that with a few bites to him as he opened the cage."

I can think of a bunch of different reasons that bird bit him, and none of them have to do with him being a man. Cra ... stuff like that just limits us, create barriers and gets in the way of building a relationship with our birds. I wish people would stop doing things like that.

When I first met the macaw I'd adopt a year and a half later I was told she was a man's bird and hated women. After a year at the shelter they realized she's just very selective. Now that she is home with me she gives me kisses and has attacked my parter, which is the total opposite to how some thought things would turn out for her.

And, welcome to the forum. :)

Welcome and be welcomed. Over time there is no reason that all family members can't be friends on some level with Bingo. Just go slow and work at Bingo's pace.

Welcome! Being a young bird owner is great- you'll have plenty of time to learn about your lifetime friend. I adopted Taco the Lilac Crowned Amazon when I was in elementary school... in 1993. He's still happy and healthy. He "chose" us also- my grandmother was taking notes on a rather withdrawn African Grey, when Taco came over and stole her pen! He stole our hearts too!
