Umbrella Cockatoo - Female
Hello everyone! I recently somewhat inherited a roughly 15 year old umbrella Cockatoo from my father and step-mother. I say somewhat because they are both still alive and well, but I seem to spend more time with the bird than they do, also we all know how long they live so I will have her at some point anyway. I'm super excited to be a part of this forum and can't wait to learn everything possible about taking care of this amazing animal. Oh, and we are from the south and when my father first got her and her feathers came in, we noticed the yellow under the wings. He said she looked like a bowl of grits with butter...so her name is Grits. Will post pics soon.

Hello and welcome to you and your too! You will find so much great information here about owning larger parrots and how to meet their needs.

A roomy cage, plenty of toys and perches to climb around on, lots of out of cage time, a healthy, well balanced diet, routine vet care as well as lots of daily attention and play will make for one happy too.

Welcome, come on in.

In the Amazon forum is a sticky thread: I Love Amazons

This is long but well worth the time to read. 90% of that information applies to any parrot regardless of species.

So you have a U2! Congradulations!
You should probably invest in a good set of shooters ear muffs if you don't already have some.
Me, I just pull out my hearing aids.:D

I have one green cheeked conure, and her name is Yuko! She is about 7 - 8 years of age!
congrats! heres a headstart on food foryour birdie-
onions, chocolate, cilantro, and avocado are all poison to birds so those are no-no foods. but, birds enjoy many foods because they can eat a wide variety of things.your bird can eat most things you eat. dairy is NOT posion, but dont give it to your bird alot or that often because it can give them a bellyache or make them sick! not to mention their poops that result from it. (ew!) every bird is different, so yours might not like all of these, but a few of my birdsa favorite foods are nectarine, carrots, red bell peppers, apple, lettuce (he likes the water that comes out when he bites it), and lastly he LOVES sunflower seeds! hope this helped you out a bit c::gcc::D

RIP Gandalf and Big Bird, you are missed.
Welcome K.W. and Grits! We have an extensive Cockatoo forum and several members with Umbrellas. Grits should have a nice transition given your long history together.
