30 yo Cherry Headed Conure
Still trying to load pics. I have a 30 year old cherry Headed Conure that is longing for a home with other birds. His name is Dude and has become quite nippy. Kids married and left me with their 2 Siamese cats, Yorkie, tortoise and lg outdoor dog. Help! Not sure if Dude dislikes all the new pets around or if it’s me he wants to hurt. I think he may be happier in another setting, but I’m having trouble letting go.

Welcome, come on in!

Thank you for coming here. There are many very experienced conure owners and breeders here who will chime in. Unfortunately I'm not one of them.

Very good advice here

Yes, talk to us.
We have helped, and/or at least supported eople who are making difficult decisions, and who are trying to do so with the bird's best interest at heart.
Soooooooooooo... I want to hear more about how you're having trouble letting go...

Well, I advertised and thought I had found him a home. I snooped a bit on Facebook and found that the new family had a newborn and a pit bull and lived in a mobile home. Very young and not married. I freaked and backed out. I have been trying to spend more time with Dude and handle him again, but he keeps drawing blood and now I’m scared of him. How do you find the perfect home for a cherished bird that you know deserves more than solitary confinement?

Dude is gorgeous! You don't see too many older cherry heads! :) My first conure was a cherry head, but he was given to me as "red masked or mit-red". My second was supposed to be a cherry head, too... but he's all mitred! (my-turd! ;) )

It's a big change for all of you from the sounds of it, especially if he's not used to other animals. My cherry head hated cats (or other small animals... he was attacked by a ferret in his first[?] home) and my mitred hated dogs. Charlie has, for the most part, gotten over his dislike/fear of dogs (he used to scream each time he heard a dog barking...). Not sure how old Noel (cherry head) was when he passed, but Charlie (mitred) is still going strong at 24! I've had him for nearly 12 years!

Did Dude's behavior change as soon as the rest of the critters joined the family? Before or after that?
