Home visit today from rescue group

Hello everyone,
This evening someone from a parrot rehoming group is coming to our house to do a home visit because I would like to adopt a parrot instead of buying one. I was just curious if anyone has had home visits before or if anyone from a volunteer group who does home visits can tell me what to expect. I do have two dogs so I hope that is not a problem. What all do they look for, etc?

Welcome to the forums Elizabeth! Kudos for adoption, facilities are overrun with birds needing good homes.

Have no previous experience with home-checks, perhaps other members can give guidance. I suspect they'll want to be assured the dogs can be safely and routinely sequestered as needed. Some breeds are notoriously "prey seeking" while others have a lower drive. In any case, the sweetest dog can cause an issue for various reasons. It is not possible to have "total" trust between canines and parrots.

I am open to a lot of different kinds of birds. I am thinking maybe an Amazon, African grey, or maybe a conure or something. I am going to an educational class done by the rescue group in a few weeks and I will get to meet some of the birds up for adoption. I am really hoping a bird will "pick" me more then me looking for a certain species. I would be happy with whatever bird seems a good fit. Hopefully, the home visit will help us kind of hone in on what sort of bird might be a good fit for me and my husband.

Welcome to Parrot Forums!

Allowing any of that group to choose you is a very wise and from many of our viewpoint a welcoming approach. Now, it is possible that first visit may not have one that is into you. But, it will happen and when it does, it will be very clear to everyone that you are the chosen one.

One of the really big ones is; Will you and your family commit to a life time with the Parrot that chooses you? This group of Parrots can live into their 50, 60 and 70's and it is not uncommon for them to be multi-generational.

FYI: Read the Highlighted Threads at the top of each of the Forums of each of the Parrots you have an interest in. This will provide you background information for each.

We had a home visit from a rescue back when we adopted our WCP, Pisces. They were interested in our home situation, how we planned to keep our dogs and cats away, and asked questions about the way we take care of our other birds (diet,time out of cage, etc).
They asked about how much experience we have with birds, and if we have ever rehomed one. That would not have blocked us from adopting if we had, but they would have wanted to know the reason.
They also spoke to us about the no-nos, such as candles, teflon pans, and things of that nature.
We really enjoyed the visit, but I was still nervous!
All rescues operate differently, but their main goal is to make sure that a bird in their care will be going to a good home

The home visit went great!! She spent about 2 hours with us and talked about her own adoption experience and life with her Quacker adoptee. Our next step is going to a class, next weekend, and then we will start hearing about adoptable birds that may be a good fit. They do a 2 month foser period to make sure the bird and family are a good fit and then it is time to decide about adopting. We are really excited. :green2:

Congratulations on the visit, I’m glad it went well! Sounds like a very responsible organization you are dealing with....can’t wait to hear how the class and meeting birds goes

(I have 4 birds - rescues and re-homes, and love them to bits)
