Green Cheek Conure (Baby)
Our family just adopted a 4 month old Green Cheek Conure named BABY.:rainbow1: She's the new love of our lives. We live in N.CA. I was planning a surprise Christmas gift this year for my boyfriend who absolutely loves birds in nature and I just figured what a perfect gift I could give him. Well.... kinda had a change of plans. When I was walking through the pet store this past week I happened to walk past the bird area and there baby was:rainbow1: Stopped me dead in my tracks. I ended up spending a half an hour talking and playing with Baby and just fell in love. So... guess it's Christmas in July lol. I waited for my boyfriend to get off work and couldn't resist my excitement. Told him to get in the car and we went and got our BABY:rainbow1:

No wonder you fell in love with Baby. He's/she's soooooo lovely.

But... get rid of the "happy hut" in your cage setup..... they're supposedly a deadly trap for all parrots, conures in particular. Some even say "not suitable for conures".
They can chew through it, and die due to the digestive tract blockage.
Happy parronting! :gcc:

I'm so glad you're here. So much to learn about diet, cages, toys, bonding...

The same thing happened to me 34 years ago... I walked into a shop and BOOOM... my life changed.

No idea if you have a little rooster or hen. Thankfully, BABY is a great name either way.

Beautiful bird.
I agree, get rid of the happy hut. I have read many stories that end in tragedy.

Most likely female based on colors, but could be male, too!

I agree with the others - get rid of the hut, also replace the wooden dowels with natural perches, no mirrors, and try to make sure that the cage has some way of keeping the top *secured* closed! Those open top cages can also be dangerous!

Beyond that, make sure you research diet and training! It's a lot to learn and take in, but you'll get there! :) Congrats on the new addition!

Wow thanks everyone for the love and the help. But, quick question Baby loves the hut and has never chewed it but totally believe u all so what does your Conure sleep in then? Also the wooden dowels to natural wood what kind should I get?

Hi there. Natural perches of various size and consistency best. There are huts made of natural material which might suit your baby. Welcome!

My Cytrynka also used to sleep in the "happy hut", which I have removed after reading the horror stories posted here. Although I was worried she will miss the happyhut (she liked it very much), she quickly got used to sleeping on a perch.

The happyhuts supposedly not only bring direct hazard to conure's life and health, but can be responsible for hormonal/behavioural problems further down the road.
Just provide variety of perches, and your Baby will find out what's best.

Welcome and be welcomed.

Like other I warn you to get rid of the death hut. There are lots of alternatives to those that are safe. Look up Sea Grass mats, easily folded into a hut, or even a large cardboard tube will be a good substitute of that hut. DO it now while Baby is young and not set in her ways.

Baby is very cute and GGC like in the love of snuggles. Just spread them around with your BF and other family members.

Welcome to the forums, and congrats on Baby!

There is no way to know for sure what Baby's gender is besides getting a DNA test done. You can do this either at a Certified Avian Vet (he should have a wellness-exam with a CAV soon anyway), or there are a lot of places online that you can order a "test kit" from, they send you the kit, and you simply pluck a few feathers and mail them back to them, and you'll get the results within a couple of weeks...costs between $20-$30 this way, but if you're going to take him for a wellness-exam to a CAV anyway, easier to just have them do it...

****Again, please get rid of the Happy-Hut, it's nothing of the sort, trust me...They actually state on the packaging "Not For Conures", that's how many Conures of different species have been killed by these things, literally hundreds if not thousands...If you Google Search "Happy Hut killed bird", one of the first pages that pops-up is a page that lists hundreds of people posting their individual stories about how a Happy Hut killed their pet birds...It's so sad, I have no idea why they still are selling these things...But please remove it immediately if you haven't already, it only takes one little loose strand of material to end in tragedy...
