Hello, everyone, my name is Brittany.

I made an account a few months ago but didn't really stick around, so I'm reintroducing myself.

Earlier this year, I adopted a 9-year-old male Greater Vasa that only has one leg. His name is Java and he's been in my life for 8 months now. I look forward to getting to know everyone here and exchanging stories. Thanks for having me.

A little backstory on Java:

he has been an aviary breeder his entire life and lost his leg due to a raccoon attack, which damaged some of the nerves in his remaining foot, so he only uses three of his four toes.

When I got him, he was very underweight, being 359 grams and severely calcium deficient.

I'm still learning his personality, and I'm not sure if I've seen it yet since he is my first parrot as I have only had a budgie when I was 11 and a dove when I was 14.

All stories, suggestions, and insight are welcomed.

You are my hero, and I thankyouthankyou THANK YOU for rescuing this darling!

Do you have any particular questions about diet, cages, care... anything?

I'd love more pictures!

I am so looking forward to getting to know you and Java.

It's taken a lot of asking around and modifying, but I think I've got a handle on the best cage for him, which is a Critter Nation, and his diet. I know Vasas are far and few, and it's been a journey trying to find members online and in person who have one or even know what they are. I'm always looking to learn.

Patagonians are few and far between, too.

Would you like to find an avian vet for diet advice? if so...

If none are near you...

In my opinion, any of the vets listed here should be better than a regular vet.
My wonderful vet recommends Harrison's. I have details if you like.

By the way, if I lose track of your thread, please feel free to PM me about this. :)

Welcome back! Please share pics! I’ve always been fascinated by Vasas.

I’m so glad you have saved him! In my experience ex breeders can be amazing pets :)

Eight months in and he has definitely come out of his shell! I'm able to pet him and handle him, even though he still doesn't know how to fly. Still, he is completely bonded to me and screams if I even think about stepping out of sight.
