Giggles - Red Crowned Kakariki
Hello, I am Shrub, Australian but living in the the Netherlands with my Dutch husband.
I have a red crowned karkariki for a few days now. Her name is Giggles.
Giggles is roughly 14 weeks old female. She is use to people being around but she is not tamed. (any tips on helping to tame her is appreciated)

I spend time with her while she is in her cage, talking with her, holding my hand there near here (not chasing her around the cage) I think I have made progress with her over short time as she allows me to get closer but she has to come to me, I have had her eating from my hand as long as I don't move.

Her cage is big enough to chill in but not fly so we do let her out in the living room for exercises so she can fly around. Most the time saying in the area we are. I put paper on the mirrors (I saw to do that online til they learn room layout) and close the doors. She even had a little bath in the sink yesterday and enjoyed when we splashed a little running water over her.

I hope to get her to the point she will be happy to sit with us freely on her choice and allow us to touch her, take her out and in of her cage.
When she is out we can get very close to her as long as we do not touch her..
When we got her a few days ago we couldn't even do that without freaking her out. So some progress has been made and I know it takes a lot of patience. Most people I know with birds received them already tamed, so my husband tells me at least when it happens, I had earn it. But guess there is no shortcuts.

We called her Giggles, well obviously because it sounds like she giggles when she talks. I love hearing her altho she isn't very noisy, mainly when she is in the cage and I leave the room or when she is flying and lands on a new spot, if left her old perching spot freely (if we weren't to close)

:green1: <---Giggles kinda looks like this But also has some yellow on her tail

Hey Shrub, welcome to the forum to you and lovely Giggles! As you will see I’m in Brisbane where it sure is good & tropical right now!

I think you’ve made tremendous progress in only a few days. I don’t know if you’ve seen my thread about my recent efforts trying to hand-tame a tiny little hyperactive lorikeet but yes it does take lots of time & patience and plenty of bribery with yummy treats! I kind of let her take her time making her own mind up and played “hard to get” somewhat and eventually she came to me and has not looked back. Mind you it took a good 3 weeks every day of unremitting (if low key) effort, like you just sitting close by her cage, & I played her lots of YouTube videos on my phone of other lorikeets to gain her interest, always with something tasty on hand. Yes every positive step is rewarding & you should celebrate them because yes you’ve earned them!

Anyway I’m sure WAY smarter members will add their wisdom soon, so again welcome and Giggles is a cutie and I love her name!
