Alexandrine
Hi my name is Adam I have just gone and got myself an 18 week old Alexandrine parrot :green2: which the pet shop owner told me was a female but when I asked so you had DNA testing done on it her reply was.

No the breeder said it was the smallest chick in the nest, now from what I have read it needs DNA testing to be sure so I guess I look forward to seeing what he/she turns out to be.

Not that I have a preference male or female, I will post some pics just as soon as I work out how to make the photo the size it needs to be to post as I tried to make my profile photo a pic of the said bird but it says error photo is to large can not upload.

So look froward to reading the forums on here :green2:

Ha Adam,

you are a wise person on insisting on a DNA test!
LOL "the smallest in the nest..." that breeder is probably talking out the lowest orifice.
I heard female parrots tend to grow a bit slower and in a lot of cases remain -as a group!- smaller and lighter than the males. But you have big females en smaller males as well, so I would never judge by size alone.(And your breeder should know better than that.)

I hope to read many stories about you and your Alexandrine and may you have a lot of fun here!

Welcome and congratulations on your excellent choice of an Alexandrine as a companion. I can't speak highly enough of them! (Smirk!)

Your bird will be three years old before he grows (or doesn't) the gorgeous Alex neck ring. Some of us like waiting to see what our birds turn out to be while others like to have the DNA test done to know for sure.

When my Barney had *just* popped his first tiny black neck feather, he escaped from his cage and flew away. He was gone for thirty-three days and (thankfully!) found just a week before Christmas. Luckily a good person found him and acted quickly to find me. Barn came home with his full male neck ring and blew us all away with his good looks! The way I was able to prove he belonged to me was by asking him to perform the tricks I had taught him. I'm *so* glad I did that!

Today is (I think) the fourth anniversary of Barney's return. I had a message this morning from the lovely lady who found him. She sent her congratulations on such an important anniversary and told me she's just acquired her own Alexandrine chick. She plans to teach it tricks 'just like Barney'. :)

I'm sure you'll enjoy getting to know your baby. Give him a chance to settle in comfortably and before you know it, you'll have a clever, funny and most lovable companion. Alexes are very clever and have a huge capacity for learning. I'm not aware of any who speak as clearly as, say, an African Grey, but many will learn a few words. Mine only say 'Hello', but they say it in so many different tones and inflections that everyone finds them hilarious.

Oh. Sometimes they'll bellow of a late afternoon, just as the sun starts to go down. All you need do is make sure your ear canal is at least six feet away from the bellowing one and you should be fine. :D
