Hello. I have two green cheek conures for a total of four green cheeks on birds. I'm mostly new to having birds. I bought the first conure last week of November, 2018 and the second two weeks after that.

My goal is to learn about parrots and have a well-considered approach to interacting with mine. I think that having an understanding of a few fundamentals is key. For example I'm using clicker training and I think it's good because it is very clear communication with the bird.

Anyways, I'm mostly here to exchange information with people about training parrots and the more philosophical side of interactions.

About the birds: The first conure came from a home where it was socialized with parents and siblings, but not much with the human taking care of them. It was about 9 months old when I got it and wings intact. Within two or three days it was flying to me for treats and preening my fingers a couple of days after that, but doesn't know I'm good for scratches yet.

Second conure was in a local bird and fish store and had come from someone else's home. I hear it's about 4 years old. Wings clipped. I can't wait for the molt. It was really sweet on me at the store and that, plus seeing that first bird could use a same-species friend is why I bought it.

To anyone here: Hello, thanks for reading, and I look forward to learning from one-another.

I'm an Amazon Snob, but still love to hear about everyone's interactions with their Parrots. In my World, I believe in developing a strong bond with the Parrot. I like to base it around; only good things happens when Humans are around and it is never the Parrots Fault, it is always the Humans Fault.

Depending on the extent of the clipping, it could take a couple of years to regrow from an extensive clipping. With hope, your Parrot will be flighted sooner.

Welcome to Parrot Forums! Enjoy!

Hey, and hi, and welcome!

May I just hit a few high points for you? Then I hope you'll enjoy following up with any questions that arise.

You sound as if you have the basics in hand, but just as a springboard...

Here's some reading on bonding for you.

Most of us swear by our avian vets in the event of health concerns. I don't know where you are, but here are some links. I only have USA info...

In my opinion, any of the vets listed here should be better than a regular vet.

What's the diet? That's critical for health. Too many are kept on seeds or other poor-nutrition things. They need veggies, legumes, grains... pellets are a good staple. Here's what I use.
Harrison's Bird Foods
I feed Harrison's, supplemented by fresh healthy treats. My first, and later, my current avian vet recommended it. My bird loves the pellets now, but to get him converted, my avian vet suggested putting pellets out all day, and putting seeds (his old diet) out for two 15-minute periods a day. That would sustain him but leave him hungry enough to try new stuff. I presume the same technique could be used to get him to eat other healthy stuff, like fruits and vegetables! My guy was eating pellets in a couple of days, and now I can feed a good variety of other stuff, knowing he has the pellets as a basic. Pellets are out all day... fresh treats a few times a day. I also like Harrison's via mail because I never have to worry about out-of-date products.

Since you're new parront, I'll just drop a note about avoiding teflon pans, which are lethal to birds if even slightly overheated.

I'm glad you're here. Lots to learn and share and enjoy!

My birds don't have names yet. I don't know the sex of either so that makes it more difficult. I'm waiting for names to come to me.

Thanks GaleriaGila for the links.
