Ringneck Parrot
Hi all, I've rescued a ringneck parrot, was told 'he' was african but after reading a few posts on here I'm convinced 'hes' actually indian!! Hes very loud and a bit nippy, loves taking food from your hand (through the cage) we do have the cage open for a few hours before we go to bed but he doesn't seem interested enough to come out yet (we were told he was grabbed from his cage at his previous owners) he's just shy of 12 months so we are hoping, with a lot of patience, that we can tame him and give him the life he deserves! (I will get a better pic when he's more comfortable in his new environment)

You are definitely hero material. Welcome!

I will offer you a few notes I usually suggest for folks who are pretty new to the world pf birds...

I hope you find them useful.

Just noticed you're in the UK... I'll see if I can find any avian vet links, in case you're interested...

What's the diet? That's critical for health. Too many are kept on seeds or other poor-nutrition things. They need veggies, legumes, grains... pellets are a good staple. Here's what I use.

I feed Harrison's, supplemented by fresh healthy treats. My first, and later, my current avian vet recommended it. My bird loves the pellets now, but to get him converted, my avian vet suggested putting pellets out all day, and putting seeds (his old diet) out for two 15-minute periods a day. That would sustain him but leave him hungry enough to try new stuff. I presume the same technique could be used to get him to eat other healthy stuff, like fruits and vegetables! My guy was eating pellets in a couple of days, and now I can feed a good variety of other stuff, knowing he has the pellets as a basic. Pellets are out all day... fresh treats a few times a day. I also like Harrison's via mail because I never have to worry about out-of-date products.

Since you're new parront, I'll just drop a note about avoiding teflon pans, which are lethal to birds if even slightly overheated.

I'm glad you're here. Lots to learn and share and enjoy!

Thank you so much for all this information! Well when we had him he was eating 'deluxe parrot food' which was full of sunflower seeds so after a bit of research we got rid of that, I think I will try him on the pellets, I'll check that link out and see what's on offer. We also give him fresh fruit which includes mango, banana, apple haven't tried veg yet as haven't been shopping yet! He was basically fed scraps when he was with his previous owner anything from toast to chocolate!!! Just glad we managed to save him when we did
