I have currently 5 in my flock currently. My first was my Umbrella Cockatoo named Baby. Last owner called her Baby as she would scream during the day at random times and why she was named Baby. She is 28 years old and had a rough life. The first owner past away due to COPD as she was a heavy smoker, then her kids took the bird and mistreated her pretty much and not given her any attention for 3 years leaving her in a rusted out cage and not letting her out except for vet visits. So she was cage bound. She one day bite the Son finger and even broke the bone. So he ended up selling her off to a store. I came in working on project installing camera and ETC and saw the bird in the cage and ask about her? No one would handle her at the store as they were afraid of her due to she of course was aggressive and would bite and attack anyone that came near her. I decide to take the chance being dealt with bird for years and slowly when up to her and offer her a peanut which she accepted and then a couple days later she step up on my arm and bonded to her. Yes she still was aggressive and would bite at times and very territorial. I slowly worked on behavior issues and then a year later I decide I was going to buy her off of them and made a offer and they accepted it and took her home and to vet to work out infections she had from lack of care in the past and now she a 100%

She now the best companion one could ask for and now socialized to everyone. It took me over a year to work out behavior issues. She goes with me everywhere I go even to work.

My second Rescue in my flock is also umbrella Cockatoo named Cooper. He I found at a garage sale. I resell and do restorations and usually stop at several garage sales during the day. I heard him in the background with other birds I ask the owner if I could see them and he let me. I saw he was in bad shape and in a cage that would have been to small for a single Cockatiel. I also could tell he was on his last legs as he was breathing hard and ended up having a upper respiratory infection. I made the guy a offer to take him he took it and immediately took him to the vet. He had yeast infection as well as a upper respiratory infection and had blood work done and found liver values were very high. Thankfully he was able to resolve his health issues and now has a clean bill of health now months later. He was a heavy feather picker, he now letting most his feathers come in, once in a while he still chew, but no longer plucks, but no where near as bad as when I first got him. He very socialized and he bonded to my female umbrella as a mate now.

Welcome! I too have a U2 lol. They are a cute pair. Crazy that someone would sell one at a garage sale...so so sad. Glad they found an owner who cares.

I was surprise as well, to make matter worst he had them in second part of the garage and back entrance to house, not even in his house with his snakes and other reptiles, 3 African grey and 2 other Cockatoos, one being a bare eyed cockatoo.

One of the lady that was at the garage sale told him where I work as she knew, us as well known in the area as fixed her phone and a week later he tried to buy Cooper back crying and saying he miss her. He didn't realize he was a male, as had him DNA tested, he didn't even have a name for him? I show him the issues he had and how he was on his last legs due to improper care and found out he only really feed him seeds and then he apologize and didn't know he was in that bad of shape, even though at the time he was pretty bare missing most of his feathers. I told him he could visit him once in a while, trying to be diplomatic, but he never even bother to come back?

So many birds are hidden away in garages... Especially feather pluckers.. I always urge those people if they are reading this, it's ok to re-home them, someone will love them

You were right to keep the birds. People get attached to ideas (often without truly caring). I am sure that the person "missed" something that the bird brought to his/her life, but the bird is better off, and the fact that they didn't come back proves that it was a fleeting thought :(

Here my other 3 in my flock

This one is named Wylie. The person that I rescued him actually rescued him from a breeder. He was about to get wrongfully euthanized as the vet they used clearly had no clue what he was doing and sure not be practicing. He had a lump in his crop and this vet told the breeder he wasn't going to make it due to he believed it was cancerous, never did any test just assumed, that the bird sure be put down due to quality of life won't be good. So lady took him from that breeder instead of them allowing him to be put down, as breeder also wasn't going to put him down. She came in ask me if I knew anyone that would take him as she not a bird person. I took him on. The lump was a common crop infection which is usually refer to Sour crop as food they hand feed him when bad. I had him treated and lump when away and took care of his respiratory infection as well. Hand fed him myself for a while. He now about 9 months old. He the most bonded to me as he like being on my shoulder and getting head scratches, plus loves to get into trouble.

Here Fresco, yes name is a male name, but is a she. He was given to me by same lady but just wasn't tamed and way to aggressive, as she had to chase her around a few times and was bitten hard. I tamed her and she pretty sweet now, always begging to come out in the morning.

Here the last one and her name is Pepper, she was given up due to the person want to get rid of her as he had over 8 Cockatiels and need to find home for a few and bought her so my male could have a companion while I am at work. This was before I received Fresco. She about 6 months old. Also wasn't tamed, but now is.
