Hello from new member

Happy to be new forum member. I have a hybrid flame macaw and 2 cute Quakers. I adopted my macaw a few years ago at 5 years old. He had no human handling, so I’ve been working with him a lot to overcome his timidness. He knows a couple of words and I can scratch his head and walk with him on my arm. Looking for your forum information to learn more and work with him.

Since your bird is happy enough to sit on your arm, why don't you consider trick training him? Not to make a spectacle out of him, but to give him some Work to keep his mind busy. I've started by target training my corella and that has been such a useful thing! It means I can ask her to go wherever I want her to be and she does it: just like that!

When you trick train, it gives your bird the chance to do things to please you and to be rewarded for it. That makes such a strong bond (or, at least, I find it does with my own birds), it could be worth investigating. We have a section on training and it has lots of useful info, whether you want to teach tricks or just useful skills like targetting.

I have to say, when I began teaching my own birds tricks, I was *astounded* at how quickly they pick things up. It took a whole ten minutes to teach Rosetta to target and she does it perfectly for me, every time. My Barney learned to put things in a dish on command and that took roughly five minutes to teach him to a point where he got it right every time.

Macaws are famous for their intelligence and willingness to work. Check out Fargo the Macaw on YouTube. His Mum, Tab, is a longtime member of our group and she's done an incredible job teaching Fargo to do all sorts of amazing things. One of these days I'm going to see if Rosetta will do a somersault just like Fargo.
