Budgie taming

I’ve had my budgie for 1 yr and 4 months. I’ve only been able to briefly hold him but that was a year ago. I can’t hokd him anymore and he doesn’t come out of his cage. The only way I can coax him to be “outside his cage” is to put his favourite toy right near the door so he has to sit in the opening. He doesn’t fly around at all. I want to be able to tame him but I am unsur how to do that.

I’ve also bought him a new cage in May and he has not wanted to move in. I’ve put the cage near his current cage but since he doesn’t leave his current cage I don’t know how to get him into his new one.

Also he refuses to eat veggies and fruit. Please help with that aswell.

firstly start putting your hand close to the cage with the door closed, if your bird get nervous or scared move away from the cage till they calm down. slowly move your hand closer and closer everyday until you are touching the cage. if your bird is not scared then just put your hand right on the cage to start. then you'll need to buy some millet sprays, budgies go crazy for them especially if they are fed pellets and don't get seeds very often. place the millet spray against the cage. you may need to leave it there and move your hand away but eventually your bird will eat the millet with your hand holding it. then open the cage and repeat the putting your hand near the cage thing except this time towards his perch. if he moves away then you should move away to but not completely just until he starts to feel a bit more comfortable. continue working on this and giving your budgie millet through the bars until he is comfortable with it both, this may take a day or a few weeks. also remember to be patient and keep training sessions short, talk to your bird lots while training in a happy voice to keep them happy and to bond with them. then once you have got that down place the millet in your hand on the perch. once he starts eating continue doing that atleast 5 times so he learns your hand = treats. then slowly begin moving the millet more and more out of reach so he has to get closer to your finger. again if he gets nervous move the millet back but not to much you need to push his comfort level. then eventually he will have to place one foot on your finger to get the millet and eventually 2. but dont do more than one thing a training session unless your sure he's got it down and comfortable, so if he steps one finger up keep doing that until he's very comfortable then next training session try both feet up. then move your hand away from the perch more and more until you are out of the cage, this step could take a while. continue doing this and eventually he will be comfortable on your finger. but your budgie always needs to want to go on your finger so although you should start giving him less and less millet he should always get some sort of reward. rewards are mainly, access toys and other room, millet, and you giving him lots of attention and talking lots, many birds also enjoy tv's and windows but make sure they know they cant fly through the window. Budgie are darn tricky to befriend....
I set up the top of my cage as a playstand, and let them come out and free fly during the day, my house is safe for them. But I can't touch them. I hang leafy greens and chop tiny veggies bits for them. They eat those very well. Then they go back to the cage at night on their own. Once Cloudy cane and landed on my arm, I was so happy, but hasn't happened again. The above advice was good.
To get him to move, drape towels around the cage he is in leaving the door open and pushed up to the new cage. Have bright light on the new cage and have millit hanging inside it. Budgies tend to move towards the light. You can also remove all but one perch in the old cage right before trying to get him to move to the new one. But if it doesn't work, give him back his perches abd try again later .

Birds move in slow motion.

The fact that he has stood on your hand at all is good.



Was this bird an adult when you got him/her?
Was he/she hand-fed?
How often does he/she get let out of the cage daily/weekly?
What is his/her sleep schedule?
Have you gotten her checked by a vet?


I know that is a lot of questioning, but it is only because your answers to these will help us better answer your original question.
