The name to which you gave your bird. Where did you get it. I'll go first.
Consuela is a QP. When the Spanish arrived in modern-day Argentina, they found these adorably cute (of course!) birds not seen before. So . . . I wanted her to have a beautiful Spanish given name. Consuela, in Spanish it means, "She who knows".

Good idea for a thread john8terry, thank you:) I often wonder how people come up with their bird’s names.

I have a few to get through so I’ll stick with the more recent ones:

Fang the cockatiel - his predecessor was named Kang so it was a natural progression.

Lilly Pilly the purple crowned lorikeet - wild lorikeets eat, among other things, the fruit of the lillypilly tree:)

Valentino the budgie - he joined our flock on Valentine’s Day

Baci the GCC - he was so sweet I named him after my favourite brand of chocolates, and it’s also Italian for “kisses”

Kang the cockatiel - a very sweet natured but small and runty female, she was named after an alien character from the Simpsons!

Twinkle the cockatiel - she was an escapee I picked up off the road and kept having not been able to find her owner. She was a lutino and she joined the flock on Christmas Day and she was so beautiful she made me think of a twinkling Christmas star :)

Pete & Dud the budgies - named after comedy duo Peter Cook & Dudley Moore

Sludge the purple crowned lorikeet - originally we called him Roger but that was too boring for a livewire like him! One evening we were watching a football match with commentary provided by Australian comedy duo Roy Slaven & HG Nelson, and they used nicknames for all the players. One player had the nickname “Sludge” and the rest is history...

Lincoln (Eclectus), Apollo (Cockatiel), Aster (GCC)
Lincoln: Lincoln from the show The 100
Apollo: Essentially after the Greek god, but also inspired from a virtual pet that I have in World of Warcraft

Very boring and lame origin stories xD

Bourke's parrots, green cheeked conure
I usually have problems with naming new birds and we often search some names and "that is a nice name let's name as":p;)
Fela (Bourke): we bought her as male and originally we named Felek (Felix). Why? Answer is above ;) But "he" turned out be a female and we changed the name for simillar but for female ;) (English verson for Fela: Felicia)
Rozalka (Rosalia, Bourke): like "Felek" above
Jaś (John, Bourke): when we got him, he was singing very nice and my mum compared him to Polish singer and we named him from his name
Zenek (Zeno, green cheeked conure): little weird story. I with my mum was in a zoo where we saw a poster with hanging bats and one of them was named Zenek. Later all hanging parrots we named as "Zenos" and when we got our GCC, the first day started walking upside down on bars. We didn't have any other ideas so left Zenek
Romek (full: Roman; budgie): when we got him, he was the only our budgie and we let him to Bourkes cage. There were 3 pink birds and one green which was new - the budgie. My parents were laughing that he is an alien - other and green :D We didn't have any ideas for name and my parents started name him as 'alien'. That didn't sound good to me and needed a quick name. The same year I was in a parrot aviary where I heard some parrots names. One of them was Romek, like I wrote - wanted a quick name and chose that one
Angela (budgie): was a pretty name for her ;)
Limonka (budgie): she was green like a lime ;) (limonka means lime)
Szafirek (budgie): he was blue like hmm... flowers from genus Muscari. In wikipedia I see common names "grape hyacinth" and "bluebell". In Polish - szafirek

Umbrella Cockatoo- 15? years old..I think?
Noodles came to me after having lived in 3 homes previously. I am not sure who named her, but I do know that she likes to eat noodles (not that she gets the opportunity very often!)

I really don't like the name (lol), but I must say, it kind of fits her...
She knows it and it is hers, so I kept it, but I would have named her something else had I been the first one to make that call haha.

Bumble - Pacific (or Celestial) Parrotlet hatched 02/19/17
Bumble: back when she was still “future bird,” I was on two waiting lists for her (except then I was waiting for a blue male, but so was everyone else and I’m impatient). I was chatting with one of the breeders and asked how big (small) they were when they hatched. She said they were about the size of a bumblebee and I replied “I WANT A BUMBLE BIRD” and that was that. It didn’t hurt that I wanted a name that had to do with her blue-ness, and Bumble the Abominable Snowman is partly blue. [emoji170]

Sunny a female B&G macaw;
Japie (m) & Appie (f), both are congo african grey;
All are rescues- had to leave their previous homes for 'reasons', are still in contact with them :)
Appie and Japie already had their names (just like D. and Rico btw).
Not great, but I did not think it fair to change them.

Sunny is/was the nickname of the heroine in the Crystal Singer trilogy by Anne McCaffrey, who had a rough ride but eventually some things turned out for the best.
I was hoping it would rub off on a sorry looking macaw in need of a reboot ;)
(who, with the best intentions of the illinformed former owner, was settled with a name that is actually a direct insult of someones manhood in a large part of the world, so that really had to go.)

Not the best of names, more a working title..

(and I am terrible at naming animals: our first budgies were greeny and bluey, my first dove was whitey ... you do not need a discription, right? ;) then we had a lutino budgy named after the guy who found it on the street and dropped it off at our place, so after that we had canaries Leal and Kalindra -> also named after some lovely people we met -and that theme continued for some time.)

Apollo (CAG) , Kona (Pineapple conure)
So , anybody that's ever seen the TV series Magnum PI , can you remember the names of the 2 Doberman's ? Right, Zeus and Apollo. So that along with the Greek god mythology is how I came to give my CAG his name, If you've seen my post on the Macaw page on my future bird you can already guess where this is going. It's not in stone yet but will likely be Zeus. Then there's my Little Green Monster , Kona! He's a Pineapple GCC so kind of a stretch but staying with the TV series being filmed in Hawaii and looking like a (tiny) mini pineapple it stuck.

Welcome to the forum!

Interesting to see the names of everyone's fids.

Well, I named my tiel ''Baby'' because when I got him in the early 2000s, in the tiel bin at the pet store he was the only one that waddled up to me looking up with his little beetle eyes at 12 weeks old. He's still a ''Baby'' bird!

"Agi" HH, "Bobby" BHP, "Buzzy" CAG, "Hubbard aka 'The Hubs' " RLA, "Iris" HYM, "KK" YNA,
"Lucy" FA (Festive Amazon) "Mickey" RFC (Roseifrons Conure), "Morgan" TAG, and “Sunny” B&G
Always interesting to see how birds get their names.

Most of our birds came to us already with names, and we kept those names except for Dolly. We were told she was a "he", and when "he" laid and egg, we named her Dolly instead of Dolby.

Hubbard was supposed to be a female, but when we had "her" sexed, we found out "she" was a he. We kept that name but we often will call him "Hubs".

Agi, is sort for Águila ("eagle" in Spanish). Agi looks and sometimes acts like a hawk.

Iris got her name because her feathers iridesce like a rainbow when wet. "Iris" is the word for rainbow in Greek.

Mickey got his/her name because we like the sound of the name. Mickey is a unisex name and is a good fit since the vet has not sex him/her. Mickey is the diminutive form of "Michael" which works since the bird small.

Jasper (yellow-naped amazon)
Lilla (senegal parrot)
Snowberry (yellow-crowned amazon)
Cricket (pacific parrotlet)
Well, I found another random old thread!

How my birds got their names…
Lilla: she came to me after the death of her previous owner, who’s name was Lilla
Ziggy: when I first got him home he would have zoomies all the time. He almost became “Zoomy” but I liked the sound of “Ziggy” a lot better
Kai: can’t explain this one! It just had to be Kai!
Cricket: sometimes when he chirped he sounded like a cricket. He no longer does it though….
Seiji: his name means ”lawful” and it felt like a good match for him because he looks very lawful
Nutmeg: literally from an online list of caique names lol
Dash: his face reminded me of Dash from the Incredibles…somehow

Oh yes now Phoebe, when I found out she was a girl and she hated the first name I gave her when I thought she was boy ( Orbit, which I still love but she made it her Alarm call) so I had the other 2 girl quakers with (P) names Penny and Pikachu, so I wanted the three (P) so Phoebe. And she likes this name thank goodness

Even though this threads kinda old...
Ryuk- He was my first bird, a lil pied cockatiel, and yes, he is named after the god of death the shishigami, from Death Note.
Sheer Khan- She is the mate of Ryuk, a normal female cockatiel, her name in her old home was Delta but I didn't really like that so I changed it to Sheer Khan because she's so feisty lol.
Romeo- I didn't name him' he's a male cockatiel, but I figured he's 12 yrs. old why change it?
Striga- He's a blue clearwing budgie. Ok, ok I know strigas are exclusively female but I really thought he was one for nearly a year, the name is from The Witcher btw.
Grim- She's a female mauve budgie, I guess I got her name from the grim reaper idk.
Billy- He's a male wild type budgie, I'm not sure why I named him that lol.
Hedwig- She's a wild type budgie. I mean come on, do I really need to explain?
Tony- He's a green male QP, I got him DNA tested, I adopted him the owner thought he was a female and named him Zoey, so I changed it to Tony. I love the MCU so come on Tony Stark?
Thomas- He's a pineapple GCC, not sure why I named him Tom, I just knew that I should name him that.
