New Here

Hello everyone I am new to this forum and have owned Parakeets/Budgies in the past. I am currently looking into adding a new feathered friend into my life now that I have more time to dedicate to them. I have not decided yet if I will return to Budgies or a different species altogether. Currently my household consists of 3 small dogs and 3 cats. Joined here to see whats new in bird care and be ensured I have done all the proper research before jumping back into the world of bird ownership as it has been quite a few years since my guys passed away. Looking forward to getting to know everyone here! I'll be sure to share photos of my previous guys as well for you all.

You know dogs and cats ( especially cats) and parrot are not an ideal combination, no matter how many cutesy pie Youtube videos you may have seen. Think hard on how theywill all get along in your family.

wrench13-thank you also for the welcome. I've had dogs, cats and birds together before and know how to do so responsibly. I never let them be out of the cages without making sure they were in a room with the door closed and if no one was home we would close the door to the room. I've never had a single issue with proper precautions taken.

GalieraGila-thank you. I always like to be prepared before bringing a new pet home even one I have experience with. With birds being such delicate creatures I wanted to make sure all my knowledge was up to date as its been a few years since I've had them in my life. Can never know too much!

Welcome, and thanks for joining! I'd suggest reading various threads in species forums you are considering. Another great method is to visit/volunteer at local rescues and shelters to interact with a wide variety of candidates.

I myself own 2 dogs and have always owned dogs and birds, and as long as you are extremely responsible about that situation, it's quite possible...However, cats are a totallly different things as they are a natural predator to birds, and even the most docile, tame, loving, gentle house-cat that has never had anything to do with hunting or killing will unfortunately try to go after birds. They are innate, natural hunters and those natural instincts will kick-in at any time...And a lot of people don't realize that even the stress of having a cat sitting and just staring at a bird in a cage can be terrifying for a bird. That being said, it's quite possible to own both birds and cats in the same house, but not until you do all kinds of research and take all the necessary precautions to keep them separated and be certain that the cats cannot get to the bird's cage...It's all about being able to provide your bird enough out-of-cage-time and direct-attention each and every day, and totally away from the cat...3 cats could make that tricky, but still possible if you do your homework and totally prepare yourself, all the other people who live in your home, and prepare your home in-general...

Never hestitate to ask any and all questions you may have, especially the questions you have BEFORE you finally decide to bring home a new parrot into your life. Welcome!

Scott-Thank you for the welcome and I will be sure to do that! One of the rescues we work with at one of my jobs(I work at a veterinary office and then do retail work) actually takes in birds and we see birds on the regular at the clinic I work at we mostly see Budgies, Cockatiels, Conures and larger Parrots for the most part.

I second this. It is just not worth the risk to have both birds and mammalian predators like cats, rats and ferrets in the same house. Dogs too are 75-25 risk depending on the breed and individual dog.

Yes there are probably 999 success stories but that 1000th Accident spilling bird blood is not worth it.
