B&G Macaw
Hello Everybody, anybody? Not sure if anyone checks this part out, never been good with forums!!

Ny names Eloise, 25, live with my significant other and our son. 2 dogs, 2 cats, 3 horses. I'm rescuing a B&G Macaw. First time Macaw owner. 30 years old. But of a fixer upper is an understatement.

Built Monty (B&G) an indoor aviary in the spare room (8ftx7ftx6ft) and an building an outdoor aviary (50ftx30ftx60ft) however Monty can not fly or stretch his wings out fully so may never be able to fly :(

I will be posting shortly with a few questions / seeking options on best ways to build up his muscles in his wings for his comfort and perhaps testing for pain incase he needs medication. And best avian vets in Yorkshire area.

Hope everyone had a great Easter!

Eloise & Monty

Hi Eloise,

I found your other post and did a boatload of talking there- so here I will just say: WELCOME!!!

Read up with the Birdman666 posts (he really knows his stuf even if he is not very active here atm.)

Yorkshire as in Great Britain?
(LOL I asumed you would be in the States/ sorry about that)
There is a sticky about where to find a certified avain vet, but also plenty of british people here to point you in the right direction.

For a bird with his history, he looks really, really good! I expected a lot worse.
:)
Nice work!

One thing about the aviary: if he decided to start some serious gnawing he will be through those posts in about 10 minutes, so keep an eye on him ;)

(I would have used serious heavyduty mesh on it, but my bird destroid cages for a living so I may be a tad paranoid about it. She would have that mesh pried off and crumpled in a few minutes. You may be one of the lucky ones whose parrot never even looks at the cage as a chewtoy. )

Oh Monte is going to improve so much, that you won't recognize him after a few months. Thanks for taking him in. Just take little steps and realize that it might be awhile.

When I built the cage I had intended to have a Cuban Amazon! Haha! So far he hasn't realised the posts or mesh are there but I'm dreading the day he does Hahaha.

Thank you. He is ever so semi tame. So much braver than I thought he would be. All I do is sit by his aivary and talk to him and read and then go and clean and cook, horse ride come back and hes happy as anything. He even walks past me and takes food from my hands. I really didn't expect this to be our starting point. My first step is going to be getting him to step up so that I can start taking him round the house with me, especially to the living room in the evenings as other half is already sulking that he misses me haha
