Just brought my GC conure home yesterday after visiting him for weeks. Of course, yesterday he stayed glued to the same spot on the inside wall of the cage. Today, he was eating, playing with toys, and even decided to come out of the cage spend time with me. I wasn’t expecting that for days.

Welcome to the forum regnric.... Sounds like your GC was well socialized, and curious enough to meet his new family, What a great sign. Especially eating, playing, and exiting his cage, was he a handed baby? or did you rehome him from another family? These are all excellent signs of a seamless transition.... Every new owners dream! Congratulations!! By the way.... as Jen mentioned, we really love pictures here, so please post a few or a dozen or so when you get a chance please, let us see pictures of your baby :)

RIP Gandalf and Big Bird, you are missed.
Welcome to you and your GCC! Having visited him for weeks likely helped the transition. Please keep us advised of progress and if you have any questions!

I haven’t determined a name yet. He’s only 11 weeks old and hand fed. Extremely quiet and likes being near me.

He's gorgeous! Welcome to the forums! I'm from Illinois also, I'd be happy to offer advice for bird vets, great local bird specialty stores, or whatever. I've got Yoda, a GCC also. And our newest, Trigger the CAG.

Yes, I’m actually in Chicago. Do you have suggestions for the Chicagoland area?

I'm way out in the suburbs and I don't go into the city much, but I'll share what I know. :)

My two favorite bird specialty stores around here are Parrot Stars in Arlington Heights (REALLY great shop) and Bird is the Word in Batavia. Both places have great people who know their stuff and do nail trimmings.

For avian specialist vets, I go to All Creatures Great and Small in Downer's Grove, Dr Ken Eisenberg was recommended to me by Dr Kenneth Welle who teaches avian medicine in Urbana. Dr Eisenberg is a really great doctor and super friendly and helpful.

Dr Welle also taught Dr Sue Horton at Chicago Exotics, who is in Skokie. I haven't every been there, but they have a 24 hour emergency service and are probably more conveniently located for you.

From the sounds of things, that’s a great start! Some birds can take very long to come out of their metaphorical ‘shell’ so well done and good luck!

I think you’ll love it here, I’ve received a very warm welcome and want to do the same for others in the same position so welcome! :)

I'm even further out that going into the suburbs is going into Chicago for me. Okay, not really, just trying to get my point across.

The two closest bird specialty stores to me are House of Birds in Loves Park which is basically a suburb of Rockford, and Birds and Beasts in Crystal Lake. I really like Birds and Beasts as they offer a good selection of a variety of seed and pellets by the pound if you like to make a variety mix. They also hand raise their own babies on site. They have a decent selection of other odds and ends that I find hard to find other places too.

As far as an avian vet, I generally use the university of Madison, so pretty much the opposite direction of you. But if you're ever heading north, they do have 24 hour emergency vets available. They aren't always avian vets, but if you show up with a bird in distress, they will call one in the middle of the night to come in.
