Hello, I’m new here. I’m 16 years old and am thinking of getting my first bird, which I’ve already posted about in the conures section. I love birds and understand the responsibility they inquire and the attention they need, and that’s honestly what I love about them, you have to earn their love through spending time with them and getting to know them. On top of all that they’re exceptionally cute and beautiful animals.

I hope I can get to know everyone here in given time.

Hey PiccoloSauce, and welcome to The Parrot Forum. Being I'm a pretty new member myself I can tell you this forum will open new doors to you, new experiences. Although I'm not new to birds at all, far from it. I found that members on this forum are great at thinking out of the box, they are very compassionate, they do this for the birds, and I often see their responses as whats best for the bird, not necessarily the owner. I do believe you will really like it here, knowing your bird will get all the benefits from your continued membership to this forum.
Having a bird is a big responsibility, as I once proved to my two daughters as they were growing up. They both had cockatiels, and it was a love fest in my home, But I have to admit, both have a deep love, and respect for birds, but both now own dogs, in their new families, with my grandkids. I can't wait to see how their lives shape up in their future, and I was glad to provide birds to them when they were young, so they could properly learn. Birds aren't for everyone, although I've been fascinated and awed by them since I was old enough to remember. Seemed most folks in our neighborhood had one type bird or another, so I was around several, One neighbor had a Mayna Bird, another had an Amazon, We had a Moluccan, another neighbor had a Macaw. They make wonderful family members, but you have to remember, They can get Noisy, and they are messy, and this may disturb your parents, so those two items alone are for your consideration, and I'm sure thats why Flboy, and Allee were asking where your parents stood on this commitment, because if their not 100% on board, This could be a nightmare for your pet and you.
We see rehoming a parrot about the same as putting your very own child up for adoption here. One your baby comes home and bonds to you, it's all about a 100% partnership, and that doesn't matter whether your bringing home a parakeet or a Macaw. It certainly seems from your post you have the best of being a parront, The building trust part, Attention part, and the bonding part, and it's really nice to see you here researching, as thats what I'm assuming your doing. Nothing better than being around like minded bird owners to pick up on new tricks, and knowledge. So anyway congratulations on your decision, and I'll look foreword to seeing you around, and catching your future posts. Good Luck!

I would suggest reading this thread (see below) carefully---birds are so much more complicated than other pets and they get more attached (which means that college and apartment living/moves/late nights etc will all be extremely hard on your bird--and potentially deadly in some instances, depending on room-mates etc ).

I went over this and all the boxes for me are ticked, apart from the one about college / uni. Which the inevitability of looms over me, it’s only 2 years away and lasts 3 years which is just too long for a bird. I think it’d be impulsive and a poor decision to get a bird right now, so thank you for making me realise this.

However I am going to continue my research and continue saving for funds for a bird, figuring out which bird is right for me etc. I know this will be all the more tempting to get one after loads of research, but I’ll just have to wait.

On the plus side, I am going to take up volunteering at a local bird sanctuary and hopefully bond with some of the birds there, getting to know what looking after birds is like, as well as seeing which bird is right for me. Overall thanks for the advice, it is a slight bummer il, have to wait 5 years but I’ll just have to hope my patience pays off!

Welcome to the forum PiccoloSauce! You are way more responsible than i was at your age, and apart from planned events like university or college, life after school can throw you all sorts of unexpected curveballs. The volunteering at a sanctuary is a great idea to get some hands on experience, just be prepared to fall in love many times over while you’re at it!

Thanks, I am just hoping to get some experience with the variety of birds they have there and hope I can use my experience and continued research on all species to help out everyone in the forum with their issues or queries.

My name comes from one of my earlier nicknames ‘The Piccolo’ as I love a place called pizza express here in the UK, and the children’s menu is called a ‘Piccolo Menu’. So it is Italian related but has nothing to do with the flute I assure you

The Sauce part was just on the spot, I’m not sure how or why I came up with it honestly, although it was probably V-Sauce related

LOL...I don't know why I feel like making pizza for breakfast today!

Well after all that I'm tempted to go retrograde and suggest you keep all of your options open. You are unusually mature and made what appears to be the best decision, but there exceptions to nearly every truism. You may find yourself in an ideal situation before college graduation where a bird becomes a good fit. So go find a sanctuary, volunteer, and keep the dream alive!

I could eat Italian food several times/week and not get bored. Almost nothing like leftover pizza for breakfast, cold and right out of the box!
