Luna is a beautiful Quaker and I would be open to any advice on how to help him to enjoy interacting with me instead of appearing fearful and squawking . He sits quiet if I leave him alone in or on his cage - just sits looking sad.

Only a few weeks. He is happy to fly from cage to perch on other side of room and is always quiet. If I go over to him he squawks and he will step up but whilst squalking then fly off. He always squawks when he flies.

Good Morning Susan, and welcome to the Forum, personally I would first figure out what your Quakers favorite treat would be, Piece of fruit, Sunflower seed, etc, then remove it from the food supply. Usually the favorite food is the first food your quaker goes to eat when fed. Then each time you walk by your quaker, drop 1 seed or item into the food dish of your quakers favorite food, This reinforces the idea when your quaker sees you, good things happen, and starts building the trust between you, heres another link I picked up from in the forum, Hope you also find it useful. http://www.parrotforums.com/general-parrot-information/49144-tips-bonding-building-trust.html

RIP Gandalf and Big Bird, you are missed.
Welcome to you and Luna! Great advice above, the thread linked by Casper is superb. Please remember bonding is a slow and deliberate process. Sometimes two steps forward, one backward. Once you establish an initial bit of trust, the stage is set for progress over time.

Welcome to the forum youngsusan and Luna!
My birdie is named Luna too~

Have you tried different types of toys? There are shredding toys, chewing toys, foot toys, foraging toys, and I'm sure more I've missed. It's all about finding what size and materials your bird prefers.
For example, I've bought two toys of the same shape and material but different sizes. She loved the small one and completely ignored the one that was too big for her. She personally likes paper, wicker, leather, and plastic beads.

When introducing different toys, you might have to take it really slowly too. It might scare him having some new and unknown in his cage but eventually his curiosity will overtake his fear. Of course, it really depends on the bird and how resistant they are to change as well!

A few weeks isn't a long time either for birds. Cut yourself some slack! Thanks for much for reaching out and trying to learn.
